The more I look at this class...

Postby PerunaPunch » Mon Jan 30, 2012 10:19 pm

shockingly...

The more satisfied I am with it. Seriously.

As usual, we started by loading up on skill players, where I saw our biggest need being at OL. As things turned out, BUS should be positively giddy, because this class now has some beef, and not one of the OLs is south of 6'4 and about 285 lbs.

I've been whining about the lack of a marquis QB prospect since June's arrival, and we get two (one being Gilbert).

The class also includes two Parade All-Americans. When was the last time you saw that much starpower in a Mustang uniform?

The biggest losses I see in the ASU/Klemm debacle are Printz and Marks. But Printz doesn't count toward this year's class and in consideration of the academic risks some of the California kids present, if I had to pick straight up between Marks and Dieter, I'd take Dieter if for no other reason than I think the program will get a productive 4-5 years out of him.

I'm not a big believer in the recruiting services ability to evaluate players. But if you're a star counter, this is the 3rd best class post DP. Phil Bennett's monster class of 2003 (statistically his best by far) had 10 3-star recruits. This class, while incomplete, still has 12.

Will be interesting to read the Recruiting Roundup on Wednesday, but sitting here at Signing Day minus 48 hours, I'm pretty satisfied with the universe. That's my 2 cents.

Good CUSA if we planned on staying in CUSA. 3rd best class since DP is the bottom class in BE as it stands now. I think we win CUSA next with all the coaching changes but the 2013 class better be a top half class in BE or we will set back 2 or 3 years. Is the recruiting roundup going to have some surprise players that we don't already know about?

That's what I was thinking. I remember all too well the days of Mike Cavan signing a bunch of 6-2, 230-pound linemen and telling us "when they grow in three or four years ..." These are some full-grown men coming in. Much better starting point.

I am a little disappointed that we were not into some more highly rated line kids. When our options are to steal kids away from leagues lesser than C-USA then we are not recruiting at the BE level. You cannot keep recruiting classes always hoping to find diamonds in the rough. You need to start with diamonds and then cut and polish.

86, you keep saying -- over and over -- that it's not a good BE class. Nobody disagrees, but this class wasn't recruited with the benefit of BE certainty. The BE announcement happened way too late for it to have a meaningful impact on the class. As JJ said at the recent luncheon, this 2013 class will be formed with the benefit of the BE. If the 2013 class is dead last in the BE, then have at it.

I say that because at one time it was a very good BE class. And it was a very good BE class with the same issue. But now that we have had the BE announcement we have gone down not up.

The class is solid. We filled needs and will be a better team next year because of it.

Keep in mind, we our program as a whole is still 5-10 years behind a Louisville and possibly a Cincinnati, so it's not entirely fair to compare the recruits at this point, even if they will be facing each other in a few years.

I believe we were ahead old Cincy a few weeks ago. Just Sayin. Since we play them in 2 years I don't think Cincy, Louisville, or anybody else going to have mercy on us when we play them and wait until we get a good couple of recruiting classes before they play us hard. We need to continue our bowl streak (when we get into the BE) or else we could get viewed as the old Vandy and WSU teams are viewed from a recruits standpoint which is not good.

UC has 32 commitments. A chunk of those aren't going to qualify or will end up heading to JC and then somewhere else.

You win games at the point of attack, the line of scrimmage. If you control the line, you control the game. If you don't control the line, your skill players need to be even more skillful. Hold a block an additional second and a 5 yard slant becomes a big gainer. I'm pleased with the offensive line additions. I'd like to see a few more big uglies on the other side of the ball. I want guys that make Louie Kelcher look pretty on the line.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

I know just because our OL commits are big doesn't make them talented or have the ability to understand our system but I do hope it works out for us.

I'm sure JJ will be putting lots of lipstick on this pig tomorrow. No where near a top level BE class and these will be the guys who should be stepping forward in the next year or so.

Standing at No. 85 right now on Rivals which puts us at about the bottom 29% of all Division 1A schools

It's amazing to me how big OL have gotten. I was at school when we got the DP. Despite having a Top 20'ish program, I don't remember any of our OL (except one guy David Something - played for the Chargers) anywhere near that size. One of my frat brothers was a scholarship OL and I think he might have gone 260.

BTW- Big East Team UConn's recruiting class is not top notch: http://www.courant.com/sports/uconn-foo ... 7347.story
