the new Big XII commish and SMU?

Re: the new Big XII commish and SMU?
The advantages of the Big 12 to SMU would be the increased local media attention, attendance would skyrocket, and I believe that recruiting in Texas would be easier. Having said that, I really like the Big East and I agree with those who say that it has potential for lots of revenue and lots of national attention, especially if we are successful. I am really pumped about BE basketball. I just wish Notre Dame would come on as a FB member. That would seal the deal for years to come.

Re: the new Big XII commish and SMU?
I prefer the BE than the B12. The BE expands our national reach as a university to the northeast, which only helps our school, because we'll still be strong in Texas. In terms of athletics, the BE also gives us a better chance to win in football. As an added benefit, we won't be UT and OU's beatches like everyone else in the conference. Additionally, the BE is much better in other key sports, including basketball, soccer, etc. We can forge our own path in the BE instead of playing little brother to UT and OU (again, like everyone else in that conference).
Re: the new Big XII commish and SMU?
BE all the way! Better nat'l exposure for university as a whole and much easier road to undefeated season and BCS bowl if we ever get recruiting turned around.

I think a good last year in C-USA and a couple of good years in the Big East would make us an appealing option three or four years down the road for the Big XII. Obviously, we have to continue to improve and more importantly increase addendance. I hope SO uses some of the Big East money for marketing.
I know someone with very good ties to the Big 12. He said Texas' D Dodds was not as anti-SMU as I thought. Neinas is a caretaker hired to stabilize things. I don't see him ever allowing SMU or UH in.
Frankly, I think SMU's best hope for an AQ conference (should the BE collapse) would be the Pac 12. If the BE collapsed, I think all the "Big" conferences would agree to expand to prevent anti-trust problems. With 2-4 spots open, the Pac 12 would have interesting choices (assuming the Big 12 survives).
Since they actually care about academics, their likely targets:
1) BYU (but the Cali schools have a very anti-Mormon bias),
2) AFA - good fit
3) Boise State - horrific academics in a small market. Schools like Stanford, Cal, and UCLA would try to avoid taking them
on.
4) SMU would open the door to the Central time zone and a major market. With strong academics and a large endowment, it could help them look past the smaller "private" school footprint.
5) Houston - would probably only happen if SMU joined with them.
6) New Mexico State Schools - The NM schools offer no TV sets and mediocre academics.
7) Utah State - would allow them to expand in Utah without having to add BYU
8. Colorado State - would Colorado let them in?

Too many tx schools is not what killed the swc
Tx sucked balls for far too long, and everyone but rice and Baylor were on probation.
At the same time Fred jacoby "passed" on newcomer espn, to stay with Raycom out of loyalty.
UTx fear of too many tx schools is misplaced. They didn't suck bc of that, they sucked bc of bad coaching hires: McWilliams Macovick
Ou and osu don't want more tx schools bc the natural fit for a new b12 is to shift them north with the b8 remnants. They lose tx presence.
So whereas most b12 may want / be fine with more tx schools, ou osu and tx prob do not.
Demographics have changed. In 1986 there were 230m Americans. Today 325. Tx went from 12-15m to 25m.
B12 could easily support smu being added and they have zero presence in Houston now.
The smutob12 points out that sec games get as much tv in Dallas as b12. Well that would change if 6 matchups were played in Dallas per year.

If you think the left coast liberals in their ivory towers will let a little Methodist school with Dubya's Library on campus in their conference, you're kidding yourself.
We wouldn't add anything to the Pac-12, we'd just be another mouth to feed when it comes time to split the TV money. If they expand further, it will be Texas/OU/OkSt/Tech to get to 16

His is idiotic. 1-3,6-8 have exactly zero chance. Smu would only have a chance if the ou tx deal comes back to he table and the p12 schools say we have a ttech problem and rather fly to Dallas than Lubbock for away games.

Re: the new Big XII commish and SMU?
I agree not desperately asking the xii to add UH and SMU. We should still consider it, especially if the BE doesnt get the TV deal they dreamed of. Hopefully we will excel in the BE and either make the BE respected or we look respectable to be asked to join another conference. I think being with most of the teams in xii would be better for us traveling and everything. Needless to say, Im extremely happy that we are out of crap usa and in a AQ conference and the best basketball conference. Hopefully TCU wont get greedy and try to get rid of our rivalry to start up more with Baylor and other teams. The TCU-SMU game is by far the most anticipated game for all SMU fans.

Re: the new Big XII commish and SMU?
I'm cautiously optimistic about joining the BE. It's a good move for SMU but the instability of the BE scares me. Just can't see long term stability in a coast to coast conference, unless ND football joins then that might stabilize the football side of the conference. IMO
I hope this works for SMU and all BE schools.

Re: the new Big XII commish and SMU?
Do we really have to start discussing potential conferences again? Let's just take 12 months and be happy that we're going to be a BCS team soon...and hope that AQ status still means something by then.

If you read the post while sober, you might have noticed that my point was SMU was a very good option for the Pac 12 if it has to expand. I did not rank them in order.
Frankly, their best options (considering academics) are AFA and SMU because it would take a miracle for the Pac 12 to ever allow BYU in.

How's our relationship with the current CUSA Commish? Bet a beer he's selected as the replacement. CUSA-MWC merge; CUSA disappears. Craig Thompson is commish of conference BIG MOUNTAIN USA, and Bannowski slides from his Irving office to...his new Irving office.

I did not read it as a ranking. If Pac12 expands, #1 is TEXAS #2 is OU which means #3 is OSU (or no #2), but might allow for a wild card #4.

People, put the acid away. We're not going to the Pac-12. My God.
