Basketball Donors' Influence/ControlIs the fact that Doh is still our coach largely because he has built relationships with the right people (i.e. big time donors)and they call the shots? Doh the Politician does a great job shaking the right hands and kissing the right wallets. If he would only treat his players with some degree of respect like he does the money men, perhaps they would be motivated to play for him.
Re: Basketball Donors' Influence/Control
Its b/c you couldn't fire a coach at SMU until the end of the 5th year, based on the past. By that time, the new system looked good, and better talent was in the pipeline, so we let this year play out. It's played out poorly. I have no problem w/anyone wanting Doh gone, but IF you're saying he should have been gone prior to this year, you don't understand what the circumstances were. Beyond that, he is very connected to our biggest booster by a long shot. You know, the man who pretty much took on a 3rd of the Moody renovation by himself. The same guy who bought home games at the CIT and the charters to the away CIT games..
Re: Basketball Donors' Influence/Control
Part of me really wants Doherty gone, but despite my wishes: I have heard ZERO to indicate he doesn't treat his players "with some degree of respect." Every coach has problems with some of his players. If anything, I think Doherty has had less drama with team members than the average coach. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: Basketball Donors' Influence/Control
It's been a ton better the last few years. The first 3, it was like a concentration camp w/good facilities.
Re: Basketball Donors' Influence/ControlHe is WAY better than the first few years.....he actually has kids helping recruit players to come here now...that would NEVER have happened the first few years here at SMU. You have to give it to him as he isn't afraid to change his tactics. He is much more liked now...
Re: Basketball Donors' Influence/ControlI can't believe how he continues to constantly scream in the kids' faces. Look up the news articles of how UNC was forced to fire him since many of the kids went to the AD to say, "if he returns, we will transfer." I don't like the fact that they did this to any coach, but it says volumes. Some people have a the skill set and ability to motivate people both on the court and in business. He's definitely not one of them. (It is entertaining to watch his Riverdancing/STOMPing on the sidelines. Almost worth the price of a ticket.)
Re: Basketball Donors' Influence/Control
First off, what happened at Carolina doesn't speak to anything that's going on here. Now, if you look at the kids who threatened to revolt under Doh, it was really their parents, see McCants & May. Both those kids have actually proven Doh right over the long haul, as they are both cancers. Now, if you want to slaughter Doh for recruiting the 'best available' despite being cancers, go right ahead. It's not like Felton was going anywhere after being handed to Doh by the mayor of Myrtle Beach, or Jawad Williams, Manuel etc. The issues w/Doh at Carolina were behind the scenes, not court related. He basically didn't want to run the program status quo, as dictated to him by Dean & Gut, and pooped all over the 'carolina way' of doing things. He lost Dean's support and that's that. Look, no problem w/anyone getting upset w/where we are as a program, but lets not bring random Carolina stuff into the equation that's not applicable, or even the way he yells at players on the bench. Most coaches have their own style, and Dohs borders on tantrum, as does the bench demeanor of many, if not most of the greats. His issues are that he isn't winning w/enough talent to win
Re: Basketball Donors' Influence/Control
Yet, many of his players from those first 3 years still like and respect Doh. Killen, Drob, and Ike to name 3 that I am sure of. And he is apparently much more player friendly now than in the past. I agree there are a lot of things to rip Doh for. This year's results being the biggest. And I think, based on that, his time here is coming (or should be) to an end. But I too grow tired of this BS about what the man's downfalls were at UNC or that people don't like when he yells at the players.
Re: Basketball Donors' Influence/ControlIf yelling at players determined whether a coach would win in college, Bobby Knight would never have had a winning season. The guy constantly screamed at his players and got in their grills. John Thompson was known to have a few heart to hearts, add in Cheney. Now not every player can deal with a Coach who yells at them. And not every kid's going to respond to a soft-spoken coach either.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: Basketball Donors' Influence/Control
If you cannot take getting yelled at, you don't belong playing sports. As my coach used to scream "This ain't f/ing Y-ball(YMCA). What kind of crap is that --------)" Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: Basketball Donors' Influence/ControlFair comments. So let's look at it objectively. His overall record at SMU is horrendous. His team's have lost to many patsy opponents too numerous to mention, and there have been very few marquee wins over the years. This happens all of the time in the tenuous coaching profession. He has been given the time and opportunity and has failed miserably. It's now time to finish up the season and move on. I wish him good luck in his new coaching position next year.
Re: Basketball Donors' Influence/ControlAs an assistant coach. There's no way DOH is a head coach at the D-1 level.
2015 INDIANAPOLIS OR BUST
Re: Basketball Donors' Influence/Control
After tonights game, not even MIller can save Doh.
Re: Basketball Donors' Influence/Controlwe just have to lose out, its that simple, and that sad
Re: Basketball Donors' Influence/ControlThere's no question Doh's gone after this year.
