Question for Hoopmanx

Postby CalallenStang » Wed Feb 01, 2012 11:40 pm

What would you think about Danny Kaspar on the Hilltop? I know he is older, but he's had a nice run at SFA. I don't know too much about them other than it seems like they are always near 20 wins.

Who would you suggest? Be realistic. Brad Stevens is not coming to SMU.

FWIW Callallen, most coaches I know think Kasper is a fantastic Xs & Os coach. They also believe that 'coaching' is the #1 priority at SMU, cause we're not going to out recruit anyone in the Big East w/o getting filthy in the process(see my Theus push).

You're definitely thinking, but at that point, you have to look at Brooks Thompson at UTSA, maybe even Cross at UTA. I'd look at all 3 of those guys before Jones at UNT, I'd also like to go a little more profile

FWIW, if Cross left his alma mater for SMU, I'd bet Reggie Brown would get a pretty solid look for that head job

UTA just opened up a college park center for their b-ball teams. http://www.utacollegepark.com/

Looks like they're on the up and up. Good for them.

Thanks for the response. Thompson has been a hot commodity for awhile, and he'd be a pretty good get. Cross sure can beat UNT, not sure if he's ready for Big East or not.

At this point, I just want someone who has proven they can win. We did profile once, would like to do profile again, but wins are most important.

I would prefer all those to Jones as well, mainly because I don't think there is even a 1% chance Jones would come here and that would be embarrassing to get snubbed by a UNT coach. Why would he come here, he gets a ton more talent to play for him in the Sun Belt then we can get to play at SMU.

lol, I'm sure Jones turns down a million dollar pay raise from a big East school, to stay in the Sun Belt. Be real. Beyond that, they don't out recruit us. Their '11 class was their best ever, and it's only b/c Tony Mitchell could only get into UNT by state rule. Even then, it's marginally better than ours, if at all. The whole class was suspended already for academics etc. Also, the '12 class for UNT is abysmal.

JohnMcK wrote:1. This job isn't a 1 million dollar pay raise, not even close.
2. The product on the court is not even close to Big East caliber.
3. Jones withdew his name from consideration to coach Auburn a higher profile school than us in a higher profile league than us that pays more than us.
4. Tony Mitchell was not considered part of their class last year, which was ranked #30 in the nation, so yes they did out recruit us. And Mitchell could get in because the Sun Belt, unlike the Big 12 accepts partial qualifiers. By the way, he would probably beat our asses 1 on 5.
5. Two players were suspended for academics, the first time in Jones' career that players were suspended, but every player that has completed eligibilty with him as coach for 12 years has graduated. And those two players are lightyears ahead of anyone we had in our class, and without them they still win. Take Nyuk off our team and we suck more than we already did and score 43 points in a game. I guess you prefer JFrog to a guy that averaged over 14 points a game, 4.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.5 steals a game? Of course you don't.
6. They have two players in the '12 class one a JUCO who is leading the nation in rebounding and #2 in blocked shots. We should be so lucky to get a guy that can rebound a basketball instead of another soft skinny scared to go in the paint player.
7. Also didn't Roger Franklin want to come here and we took freaking Williams instead of him? He would be the second best player on our team right now.
8. Lucky for us we don't play them, but if we did this would have been the year to. Next year they probably make some noise in the tourney if Mitchell stays and we finish near the bottom of CUSA again.

1) We currently pay more than double what UNT does, even w/Jones' new deal. In the event we can Doh, the powers that be know we have to pay well over a mill plus, not including staff, to hang w/Big East numbers. SMU, should it hire competitively, will easily be about a million more than the UNT job.

2) No one is disagreeing, so I'm not sure what the point is. We need a coach that gets far more out of his players, and better players as well.

3) Jones had NO CHANCE at the Auburn job. Auburn is a UA school that had no interest in Jones. Please, just please, tell me about UA grassroots, its programs, and how they hire.

4) Tony Mitchell is a fine player and I like him as a person, but he had no other options. This wasn't a Sun Belt partial qualifier situation, or he would have ended up in a more profile league that also accepts partials. Its a matter of UNT having to accept state resident non-qualifiers, by law.

5) LOL @ Chris Jones & Jordan Williams being light years ahead of anyone in our class. They've been given minutes and opportunity. I like both of those kids as well, and am not going to talk badly about them, but I wouldn't trade our frosh for them. Of course I don't want see Frog vs Jones, but Manuel has a higher ceiling than Jones, and they don't have anything like our frosh bigs. All those guys have offers the UNT bigs can only dream of. Beyond that, I have no problem w/Manuel & Russell vs Jones & Williams. That's a draw at worst.

6) The JUCO kid is considered a low major by 3 different recruit coordinators I've spoken with. One a Big East rc, the other an SEC rc, the 3rd an MVC rc. Now, you're a world class troll if you're gonna compare him to Blaise w/quality Big East, ACC & SEC offers?

7) Franklin wanted to come to SMU and we passed, its pretty well documented. Williams was here before the Franklin transfer, so it wasn't apples for apples. We ended up using that ship on Nick Russell which most would do. Franklin has played well, but I'm not sure that means SMU made the wrong call. That's yet to play out completely.

8) Just b/c we're vastly underachieving doesn't mean UNT gets put on pedestal for being 12-9 in a crap league. They are a good young squad that won't have Mitchell for any time, have two impact frosh that can't stay eligible at a borderline JC, and nothing coming in. They are a good Sun Belt team moving forward, someone give them Bickles cookie
