As usual ponyboy doesn't know what he is talking about. He tried to recruit each and every one of those kids. He was in their homes

I'm sorry. My mistake.

Is that ethical?

Yes, recruiting for the school that employs you is ethical.

OTOH, recruiting against the school that employs you (while working on their dime) because you assume that you are going to move on...that's when it crosses over to unethical.

Jones knew, everyone knew, he was gone to Arizona State. Then ASU amazingly does an about face, breaks a handshake agreement, and leaves June red faced holding the bag.

June did what we EXPECT everyone else to do. He just jumped the gun. So he gets the hit for not waiting until the ink was on the paper, a mistake 99 out of 100 of us would have made. He's apologized and is making his amends, including changing his public wardrobe for the fashion plates out there.

What else do you expect from the man who singlehandedly saved SMU football from extinction?

i expect a better effort in recruiting by all coaches on staff, plain and simple. Even if we miss on some kids or don't get the results, I'd like to see the effort put in early for 2013. IN Teaxas, unlike Hawaii, most of the top kids commit very early. I want to see our offer list grow and really make inroads into the D/FW schools and surrounding areas.

If that happens, I think you will see less complaining on this board .

You don't start work for your new employer until you sign the contract and resign your current position. Period.

The fact that you think so many people would have done the same thing tells me a little about your personal code of ethics.

I appreciate what he has done here, but I do not support the decision to reward unethical behavior (with an intent to harm my alma mater) by continuing to employ him in a position that allows him to shape the minds of young people who will represent SMU during and after their time on the Hilltop.

Saban flew into Dallas and personally visited Lake Highlands High School to recruit a junior OT. I hope one of our coaches/recruiters were able to jump in the car and drive across town to do the same. Who knows... maybe this kid wants to stay in the area so his family can watch him play.

Calallen, you must be talking about when JJ told Holloway he would have a spot for him at ASU.

I hope we are in on him. It must have been Kent Perkins since he is the number one player in the area according to DMN area top 50.

1) Kent Perkins 6-5 300 Lake Highlands Offers from Bay., LSU, OU, OSU, A&M

You don't know anything about my personal ethics, Calallen, and it's not a good idea to jump to conclusions. I'm trying to follow the reasoning on this board for those who are still mad at June. Thanks for working with me.

So we know beyond all reasonable doubt that June recruited for ASU while still employed at SMU. There's no room for doubt. And we know that it's a serious ethical lapse to have done so.

So what do we do from here? What do you expect from SMU and from Coach Jones?

Before you answer, though, how much of your answer is based on hurt feelings that he'd consider leaving -- and how much on the actual crime? In other words, how much is just injured pride?

None of these guys get off their [deleted] and recruit. Fact-none of them get the job done on the recruiting trail. SMU's Coaching Staff averages 56 years old. 6 out of 9* Coaches are 56 or older. This staff averages 10-15 years more than other Texas football staffs. If you think these guys are going to miraculously hit the recruiting trail and get commitments from 18 year olds then you are about to get disappointed again.

* I forgot Frank Ganz,Jr but who the hell cares-we know he doesn't bother to recruit anyway so why bother. I read hundreds of recruiting reports of SMU recruits since he's been here and I honestly can't remember a single recruit who even mentioned his name

Wow Stallion thought you would have at least considered ADEA......

Come on now.. that is more than jumping to a conclusion.. it appears to me you are trying to alter the truth..

I can see Jones telling a recruit that has been in the SMU works and who expects to play for Jones wants assurance from Jones he will get the opportunity. I don't see the statement to a recruit "if I go I will take you with me" as being unethical behavior in the loosely regulated period when coaches come and go. If so College sports would need judicial oversight to make all coaching changes.
