Which team is that?

Right now, it would probably be a CUSA team left behind like Rice or Tulane (definitely not Navy). As we improve, it would probably be a better CUSA program like Tulsa

So SMU's OOC schedule should be an FCS school, a CUSA school and TCU? Two layups and a rival?

I think we should play Rice Baylor TCU and UNT. Mix in FSU, USC, Notre Dame, etc instead of UNT once we get things going on all cylinders.

Rice wouldn't do anything for attendance, why bother?

Simple, the BE schedule is going to be harder than the CUSA schedule. While not a SEC schedule, there are not full on patsies in conference play after next year. As I understand how the BE will work, our side of the bracket will mean playing BSU, Houston, SDSU, UCF (and probably AFA) every year.

If you don't play a Big12 or SEC team, that leaves the former members of CUSA. Frankly, none of them are likely to be "good" draws.
- Rice has the advantage of tradition.
- Tulane has the advantage of great road trips every year.
- Until we up our game a bit, we probably want to avoid Southern Miss and Tulsa for a while.
- If Memphis doesn't get in the BE, we could do a deal with them for an annual BB and FB game.

UTSA and TX State make much more sense for those slots than Rice and Tulane. Rice and Tulane are tiny private schools that won't have many fans traveling to Dallas. We shouldn't be leaving the state for OOC games unless its for a big-time opponent and we shouldn't be wasting any more slots on the schedule playing C-USA teams because they haven't done [deleted] for our attendance during the time we've been in the conference.

Rice is our second most played series of all time. Tradition matters.

UTSA sounds like a a fake university. I know they want to move up in the FB world, but I doubt they have a big fan base that would travel to Dallas to see them play.

As for Texas State, I am pretty sure that was the name of the fake school in the football movie filmed at NTSU with Kathy Ireland as a kicker.

Keep in mind that there is no other D-I program in San Antonio. Being that the only other major sports franchise in town is the Spurs, the town would probably rally around having a college football team of it's own. They'll bring fans. I believe they drew 35k in their inaugural season.

Tradition clearly doesn't matter to fans on either side or more people would show up for that "rivalry" game. Just drop them, that game does nothing for SMU.

Some traditions just have to die. Rice clearly has little intention of being competitive, they don't draw and they don't travel. There have to be better OOC options. UTSA may sound like a joke to some (and maybe they still are), but San Antonio has been dying for a football team to get behind for decades and they will likely have an active fan base that would be more than happy to make the 4 hour trek up I-35.

I would prefer to keep the series going with Rice and TCU OOC or alternating with them. They are natural rivals and they should remain on our schedule. Other than than other OOC games should include a patsy. At present Rice is not a patsy for us, so I would rather play SFH, Tx St., perhaps Grambling for a more likely win.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
