Ironic since he was the coach that took the Pats to their first Super Bowl.

It is such a shame that SMU's greatest sports heros remain virtually anonymous for the present generation. where are the bronze statues(other than Walker) ringing Ford Field....Berry, Gregg, Rote, Pony Express, Dandy....

+2 We should be promoting the sh*t out of our heritage. It's really our best and until recently our only asset.

Why? Everybody else does. That's what makes college football - college football.
With exception of the bcs-BS, of course.
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Re: Raymond Berry, SMU
Post-DP we should have been using our history as a crutch.
You can keep a fan base going simply by pandering to their nostalgia. Look at how the Cowboys have handled +15 years of futility..."hey, remember how good those SuperBowls with Aikman and Emmitt felt? Lets pump guys into the Ring of Honor so we can remind fans how good being a winner felt." It works.
Dallas, come to a SMU game, not because we are awesome, but because you'll see Doak Walker, Raymond Berry, Dickerson, James, LeVias hanging out on the sidelines and signing autographs. We'll show you clips of Rote and Meredith playing and other NFL greats who you love, which will make you respect SMU although we have a worrisome team right now.

Re: Raymond Berry, SMU
No need to live in the past...just honor its greatness or else only college historians will know. for instance, there are those who say the "30" series on the Pony Excess was actually a good thing because the young people had no idea where SMU was and just how good they had been. Just like those middle-aged people have heard of the Doak Walker era and know he was great but not about the great teams and marquis matchups.

Don't necessarily agree. A lot of college football is based on long-standing rivalries - ie. Mich- Oh. St., Ok-Tx U, etc. Those old rivalries keep the fans' fires burning and create interest.
We really have no great rivalries except for perhaps froggie high. That needs to change to get more butts in the seats and create more passion for SMU. JMHO.
GO PONIES!!!
