Fred Smith, of FedEx fame and fortune, once promised something around $10million to any BCS conference which would invite Memphis.
Here's the link, from July 2010:

Wonder if the offer still holds?

I would enjoy this.
In all seriousness, the Beale Street area of Memphis is nice, there's some great BBQ, but it's not like Atlanta (Buckhead) or Dallas (Uptown/Park Cities/etc) where there are nice/super safe places to hang out. You should be careful in pretty much every part of the city, especially late at night.

As a former resident of Memphis, I can tell you it is an under rated place...great people, an awesome music scene, good food other than bbq, cool parts of town like cooper young / mid town / east memphis ALL with hot spots...tons of smu alums there and as somebody told me last year, electrolux, mitsubishi, american brewery, american steamship, riviana foods would not move plants, staff, execs and facilities there if the city was full of gun crazed, under educated whackos...

Another good regional rival and a reasonable trip for a football weekend from Dallas (and a fun one too). Sounds good to me!

kinda what I was thinking. This is probably a defensive move, thinking they will lose Louisville to the Big 12. Good news is CUSA should pick up La Tech now.
Re: Memphis to the Big East
Remember football is what pays the bills. This is not good for the BE, either Louisville and/or Cinci is leaving. The BE is looking more and more like CUSA 2.0

...and both of those schools you mentioned were in CUSA six years ago.

I'm sure the Memphis people are talking about how this gives them the chance to make football better just like we are talking about how it gives us the chance to make basket ball better.
It cuts both ways.

Memphis has beaten us something like 5 out of the last 6 times we have played. IN FOOTBALL.

Yes, I would imagine this was an olive branch to the basketball schools, since they have to play us and other crappy football additions starting in 2013.
A few years back when Tommy West (I think) was the HC at Memphis, they went to some bowls and drew pretty darn well- around 35 or 40k a game I think. Better than we can say. Also, they recruit Memphis a whole hell of a lot better than we recruit DFW.

So that means what? We're not that good. Justifying this is not going to make it better, picking up Memphis in all sports is not an upgrade or a lateral move, Memphis is a degrade where it matters most.

Damn, we're 1-4 against them. Phil Bennett went 0-2 against them. Yeesh.
