Stumper: last SMU QB to go the distance
I was trying to think of the last SMU quarterback who:
- Started at least one year
- Did not transfer in or out
- Never quit the team or got thrown off the team.
That eliminates J. J. McDermott, Kyle Padron, Bo Levi Mitchell, and Justin Willis... how far back do I have to go?

Re: Stumper: last SMU QB to go the distance
good question, my guess is Dan Frieburger. If memory serves, I think Cavan even jacked with Ramon Flanigan and gave the job to someone else. Freiburger was the last one that started at SMU, finished as the starter and no drama in between.

I think Hoopfan is right.
Cavan messed around with McCown and he took off. Sanders took off, I think they turned Steve O'neill into a TE.

This curse goes back farther than that
Mark Hodges was the Mesquite %A Champ QB but he wasn't who I was thinking of-he stayed and played mostly special teams through graduation. Who was the guy that had trouble throwing screen passes after Bennett touted him as the most underrated QB in the state.
Who was the QB of that 10-7 Sleepfest against Baylor in Waco? Ah yes Tate Wallis.

Re: Stumper: last SMU QB to go the distance
Ramon "20 years of Eligibility" Flannigan finished out his eligibility and Frieberger did as well. Other than that, it's pretty bad:
My favorite SMU QB quitting incident: a QB we took out of Highland Park right after the DP quit school to write poetry.
Mike Romo, our QB after the DP quit the team because of injuries. I don't blame him because he was really injured and couldn't really play anymore. After quitting in his comeback attempt, he gave a great quote that went something like: "I don't want to go out like an Old, Fat Elvis."
Bobby Waters, our QB before the DP, left for Missouri after we got the DP.

Re: Stumper: last SMU QB to go the distance
Didn't Chris Phillips stay on the team after Bennett moved him to another position? I feel like he did, even though he didn't play anymore.

Tate Wallis from Ennis. Isnt he coaching at baylor now?
Re: Stumper: last SMU QB to go the distance
Interesting thread. TCU starting QBs since 1999....
Patrick Batteaux
Brandon Hassell
Sean Stilley
Tye Gunn
Jeff Ballard
Casey Printers - the only guy who played and then left without graduating.

Our incompetence at managing the quarterback position as an institution is really quite astonishing.

Some said he considered it during the ASU/Klemm ordeals.

Going as far back as 94, I can only think of two--Ramon and Mark Humble. Hum7 never played much but he finished at SMU.
