never cared much for the helmets however our 'complete' uni is far better than most out there -
yeah - i'm a traditionalist but if we go to these mod stripey unis of today which are only a fad, that's a big mistake - change for the sake of change which we've been doing for too damn long is no good / doesn't give anything a chance to take hold & it gimmicky! life is too short - come on coach, don't screw with it unless we go back to the traditional smu look of the 30-40's, 60's or 80's! ![]() BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.
I think our current uniforms are just fine the way they are. Watched some of the Falcons - Rams game last night and the Falcons' uniforms were similar to ours except they use the white pants vs our grey pants, all in all a pretty good look. At one time I prefered the Navy blue jerseys, but now I'm leaning towards the red. Bottom line I'll go with either, but thumbs down on the royal blue. I agree that the numbers on our road uniforms should be red.
As for looking like Texas Tech...we don't really unless we start wearing black pants. I'm just glad we aren't like the froggies and have to wear purple.

black & purple plus goofy faddish broncos-stripes! YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

I would add that I like the classic looks of:
Notre Dame Penn State Nebraska Navy Army USC Simple and traditional. Reminds fans that you are part of history. The Doak Walker look isn't bad. Pony Up
The current uni/helmet combo is the classiest the team's ever had. My one concern is that the logo is difficult to see the on a dark blue helmet. We've got a wonderful logo and no one can see it.
Maybe if it was a candy-apple red (kind of like fire-engine red) it would be better. The current Mustang is a deep, garnet red. Always a Connecticut Yankee, but happy in Texas since January 1986.
Re:
Bright red Mustang decals showed up clearly on the white helmets, and the negative of that, bright red helmets with white Mustang decals was even BETTER ![]() Also, bright red helmets are the TRADITIONAL helmet from at least the 40s, and 60s glory years.
Re:
Per Ed Davidson, the head equipment guy, taking the names off the jerseys was Bennett's idea (I hope for last year only....very low budget, cheesey look, not to mention lack of player identification). The idea of red jerseys only he left up to the players. I miss the blue ones as well.
So, are you saying ND, Penn State, USC and a number of other prominent football schools look low buget and cheesy??? I had not paid that much attention in the past, but was rather amazed this year while watching games on TV to notice how many teams do not have names on their jerseys. I don't really care that much one way or the other, but if they don't have names on the jerseys next year again, buy a program at the first game and carry it with you. You will learn the names that go with the numbers pretty quickly when the players make good plays over and over.
Re:
PK, your list of prominent schools is expired (there are no others, except A&M that did it for a season) and we hardly have anything in common with ND, Penn State and USC. What we looked like was San Jose State, whose budget is the lowest in the WAC and is the only other team in the WAC without names. There are none in C-USA. Buying a program does not answer the problem either for the non-diehards.. We had at least a dozen players on the sidelines with the same number last year, and whoever is the backup linebacker that wears #33, was identified as the ball carrier several times last year when it was Richel Massey. Shawn Heilbron, the director of Athletics Marketing, told me he took a friend to a home game last year and was talking about Adami. The new to SMU fan said Adami did not look big enough to be playing defensive line. He was looking at the wrong #14. Yes, outside of ND, Penn State and USC I think it looks cheesey and low budget. I met Tony Eckert last year and he told me the players didn't like it. Big surprise. Many of the top level high school teams have names now. The players like it...so do fans. That is why it predominates among college and top level high school teams. We had them for 22 years before last year, unlike ND and Penn State where it is a tradition, and they are good enough and / or get enough player recognition to do what they want.
Like I said DP, I really don't care one way or the other, but you are wrong about there not being other "prominent" teams that don't have their names on the jerseys...had I known I would be discussing this subject again I would have taken notes. Putting the names back on the jerseys won't cause me any heart burn, and leaving them off is fine too. I'm more concerned about the team winning than whether or not I've got to buy a program. I'm not sure why Eckert has a problem with his name not being on the jersey...we know when he is out on the field or on the sideline...just like we would know with his name across his back. BTW, everyone knew who Doak Walker was and he didn't have to run up and down the field with his name on his jersey to prove it.
