The only rotation was at guard and it was one person. All the others played until we were well enough ahead for backups. That would be only a few games (UTA, NTSU, Rice, U of A).

at least 4 guys were multiple year lettermen in 1982 (according to the 1982 Review Book I got) and so would have been lettermen coming into 1981 too-Joe Beard, Scott Gibson, Brian O'meara and Ricky Schulte. Got to admit they had some talent to work with-I count about 7 Offensive Lineman that received some All-SWC consideration during their career and/or NFL experience. Plus Rickey Bolden at TE who was another Lineman in that Offense. They were loaded-not sure you can say the same for this group we shall see:

Bolden
Beard
S.Gibson
P. Hartnett
D. Hellestrae
B. O'Meara
A. Campbell

All those guys plus TE Norm Reavis lettered in 1981

Stallion wrote:yeah but those backups had all played the first series of the 2nd and 4th Quarters the year before right? Can't pinpoint exactly the year they started doing that but SMU literally substituted the entire line for seveal years to develop depth. That could have been a Bobby Collins thing but I think there is no comparison between the talent level on those backups who started. We are going to have to rely on about 5 guys in the rotation that didn't even letter-I don't remember that to be the case in 1981.

I seem to remember Collins had the 1st unit go the first two series, then rotated lines.

Multiyear letterman in 1981 would be Joe Beard (Played a bunch in '79 when the O line was decimated with injuries), Gordon McAdams (who lettered on defense his first year), Perry Hartnett (lettered on Defense his Fr year). Tab Keener also had multi letters as he got experience in ’79 with the injured O line as well. O'Meara was a Fr in '80. Staniland may have lettered in '80 but would not have been a multiyear letterman in '81. Gibson was a multiyear letterman in the Defense prior to O line.

To be sure there was experience and talent in ’81.

I still feel we will be fine this year on O line as they are not going against SWC defenses week in and week out.

June went through what a lot of the "problems" with the o-line were at a couple of the film sessions last year. We all know he LOVES the QB, and even he said JJ had a propensity to hold the ball too long and to drift out to the field side of his intended receiver, effectively shrinking the pocket. QB play and line play really count on themselves to look good. With 2 of the 4 graduating seniors slotted to be drafted and another talking about trying to get picked up, I'd say line play wasn't so terrible.
