The best thing we've got going . . .

has to be the MUSTANG BAND.
I went to the SMU women's game on Saturday, along with about 600 other people (disappointing attendence, but I digress). It wasn't much of a game, but if there's such a thing at atmosphere in an empty arena, this was it.
The Mustang band played strong, played loud, and was enthused throughout. I've been to at least 200 home games at Moody, so this is no surprise to me. I've listened to post-game interviews on the radio before that have been drowned out by the band, and that's coming from the radio station on press row across the arena from the band.
But at a women's game, in front of a dead crowd, it was refreshing to see and feel their enthusiasm.
At the end of the game, a line formed along the baseline in front of the band waiting to meet the SMU women's team and get autographs. As is the custom, the band played "Varsity" right after the buzzer, then played a few more tunes, including the one in which half of them sing rather than play. Then comes the fight song again, and while they were playing it every kid and parent in the line was holding their hands over their ears because the song was so loud. I was standing underneath the basket and loved it!
Then the band put the instruments down, and sang "Varsity" in perfect harmony. It was touching to hear every band member singing at full vocal level. If only everyone would put the same spirit into "Varsity" and the national anthem when they're played before the game.
Band folks - you are indeed THE HUB OF SMU SPIRIT. And I thank you for it.

One question, if someone will be kind enough to type it here. I'm assuming it's no band secret or something only band members can do.
What are the words to that song you sing after the games. I couldn't understand many of them while under the basket the other day.

Again, my regards and my thanks to the good ol' Mustang Band!

The words to Shanty Town, which the band plays and sings after every basketball and football game are not a secret. But why don't you get the words and assist the Mustang Band Support group, The Diamond M Club, by purchasing the newly released Mustang Jazz Volumn 1. This CD has been digitally remastered from the original master tapes.

We almost lost this great album because of the shelf life of magnetic tape. If we had waited just 2 more years, we would not have been able to capture and remaster this album. Thanks to the work of several Diamond M Club members who work in the film and television audio industry, we were able to save this recording.

Not only did the Diamond M Club save this original recording, but we have remastered the original 5 nationally released albums that were recorded in the fifties and sixties. The club plans to rerelease one album every year for the next 5 years.

These CD's are available for purchase in the foyer of Moody at the basketball games or you can print an order from on the club web-site at www.diamondmclub.org. The cost of the CD is only $15. The profits from the sale of the CD's goes to the endowed scholarship fund of The Mustang Band, so not only will you be able to listen to great Mustang music, but you will be supporting The Mustang Band.

Thank you for your kind comments about the band.
Just send 'da money.

Shameless plug, yes! But DAMN is it a good CD
May I suggest listening to When The Saints Go Marching In. In my humble opinion, the BEST arrangement of that song I've EVER heard ANYWHERE!

Also, thank you sooooo much for the kind comments. You know, I LOVE playing down there for you guys, but sometimes it's hard to know if we're doing well/being noticed. So, as a humble request, for all of you reading this, if you can remember next game, the greatest sound in the world is your applause after a song. THANKS!

'spaz' and 'know' should never be mentioned together, unless we are discussing the science of fat chicks.

I think the words to Shanty Town were posted at some point in the football forum, just go to the search feature and search for 'shanty town' and it'll probably come up.

I was complementing your well thought out theory about fat chicks, it is good. Not good like Mustang Jazz Vol. I, which is truly great and everyone should own, (and anyone who happens to own a store should sell) And I assume 'double duece' means over 200... I've never dated a girl that big! I'll let Angela know you think she is.....

There's a campus in a town on a little plot of ground
where the green grass grows all around, all around

The roofs not worn nor badly torn
or tumbled to the ground

'Just a real cool place and it's built way back
about 25 feet from the Hilcrest track

It lingers on my mind most all the time
keeps calling me back to that little grass shack

I'd be just a sassy as a Mustang lassy
If I were king it wouldn't mean a thing

With the boots so tall and the writin' on the wall
and it wouldnt mean a thing,
NOT A DOG GONE THING!

Theres a chick waiting there with a t-bird spare
just blowin' her top for me to get there

'Looking all around and I'm rockin' with sound
cause i gotta get back to my mustang town!

WOO!

I could be wrong, but I always thought it was "Lookin' all around and a rockin' with sound." I could just be getting old and the memory's going. . .

I just listened to "Shanty" on Vol. 1, and the words are what I thought they were. My memory is intact. :) Sorry, eyes-on-the-diamond-m.
