EWU fan here

Post by Screamin_Eagle174 »

Greetings Pony fans!

Sorry to hear about your loss (okay not really) in regards to Padron. As you might expect, I'd love for him to come to EWU as well, given how BLM turned out for us. Don't want to bring up too much bad blood, but was wondering what everyone's insights are regarding Padron. Strengths and weaknesses? We have some great QB coaches in Zak Hill and HC Beau Baldwin, and have a great tradition at EWU of coaching up some stellar QBs at the FCS level over the last decade. Lastly, do any of you have insight as to where he'll likely end up? Does he want to sit out a year and play a final season at another FBS school, or does he want to play right away? Trying not to count my chickens before they hatch, but given BLM's path, it's hard to imagine Padron choosing to go somewhere else, especially since we return some talented and big WRs (two 1000+ yarders from 2011, and 6-5 Brandon Kaufman who sat out most of last season with a broken hand after putting up 1200 or so yards and 15 TDs in BLM's first year). Sufficed to say, we have a lot of weapons for him.

It was good to see BLM go somewhere and find success.

Regarding Padron, here's some info:

Strengths:
-Moves around in the pocket decently - he's not fast, but he does have some mobility
-Arm strength is pretty good
-Size is ideal for a QB
-Always seemed to be a good leader on the field

Areas where he needs to improve:
-Thinks too much (too much time between snap and throw)
-Accuracy on long throws is hit-or-miss

No idea where he is going.

Congrats on your NC and Bo Levi's Walter Payton Award, there were a lot of people back here in Dallas rooting for him to do well. I expect him to get looks from NFL teams like your last few QBs.

As for Padron per his twitter (should provide insight regarding his destination) he plans on taking a visit to EWU in a few weeks. He's still in school at SMU through the Spring semester. Naturally considering Bo Levi's success that was the first place I thought of when I heard Padron was transferring.

Padron has all the tools to run EWU's spread at a high level, he showed flashes of brilliance here but just wasn't a quick enough decision maker or accurate deep passer to make the R&S run at a high level consistently. I hope he ends up at EWU and does well.

Padron has all of the physical tools. He Stands up in the pocket well and can see over most pass rushes. Not fast, but can knock linebackers down when he runs. He throws a nice deep spiral but has had accuracy issues. From what I have heard he is an above average leader and a good guy. He never seemed completely in sync with the R&S scheme. Learned great work habits at arguably the best HS program in the state. I think he was really cut out to play in a traditional pro style offense.

Great stuff, thanks.

What kind of offense did he play in HS?

No huddle pass-heavy spread, though he didn't start until he was a senior and only played a handful of games before getting hurt and missing the remainder of the season.

Sounds like he would be a perfect fit in Cheney then.

EWU fan, id love to hear your QB's coaches secrets on developing QBs. The Hilltop has turned into a farm system for EWU QBs. Maybe SMU just needs to paint the field red?

Our HC Beau Baldwin was the starting QB at CWU back in the day, until Jon Kitna beat him out. He stuck around and was a graduate assistant and has been coaching offense/QBs since, so he knows his QBs.

Just out of curiosity, how many years of eligibility does Padron have left since he missed most of this year to injury? Is it just one? If he seems better suited to run a pro-style offense, EWU sure does seem like a good fit for him.

he may have 2 years left if he is given a medical redshirt for this year. His back "injury" was a bit suspicious and I think all along they were planning on seeking the extra year.

He's a good one for sure. Got a girlfriend at TCU though, so not sure how keen he is on moving to EWU.

Thanks. It'll be interesting to see where he ends up. Hopefully he enjoys his trip, but could also understand wanting to stay close to home with the GF situation.

yeah, personally I am sorry to see him go. We have no proven starter at QB, and although Gilbert should be a good one when he transfers, he isn't on campus yet, so anything can happen. Padron played out of his mind in the hawaii bowl a few years ago, but just wan't able to consistently replicate that success. But he did win enough games to take us to 2 bowls while he was at the helm.

Stengths - big solid guy, can scramble, rocket arm, smart, good kid
Weaknesses - Accuracy, too jittery in the pocket, tends to stare down receivers

Honestly, the word of the "injury" took place a little too late in the season to go for the medical redshirt. I believe it has to occur before 25% of a team's games in the season have taken place, and we know that he dressed for the games up until the USM game, which I believe was the 7th game of the season.
