I predict big things from Phillips... and it won't bother me if he's not our starter next season (even though I would like that more than anything else). I wouldn't argue with Mustache Man if he wanted to play Ekert or Romo, if he feels that they give us the best chance to win now. But the coaches must fill Mr. Phillip's every (non-academic) waking moment with football knowledge, technique, and film.
Phillips is a bright kid, and he has oodles of athleticism. This is not a sunshine prediction - I would say this about Phillips even if he played for a rival - He will be mentioned as a pre-season Heisman candidate prior to his senior season. (He won't win, nor will he be a finalist.) There, I said it... call me a sunshiner, but I just got a ton of faith in this kid. Feel free to criticize, but I still remember dropping my bowl of Cheerios one year when ESPN mentioned Ramon Flanigan as a pre-season Heisman cadidate. Of course that turned out to be one of those years that Ramon got injured in the first game. So, here's hoping Phillips is under center next season (and hope Stallion's prediction does not come to fruition).
We had all better hope that Phillips is our starter and that he plays well, otherwise we are looking at another losing season.
And next year, it is imperative that we find a serviceable JC quarterback. We cannot rely on Willis or Johnson if Phillips goes down.
Re:
Although I believe Chris will be a 'force' in 2006, let's keep in mind that he has yet to win an NCAA FB game, whereas Eckert & Romo have contributed to SMU wins...------------
Re:
It didn't result in a win, but Phillips earned a ton of my respect in the last game of the 2003 season against TCU. I think we lost 20-13 but Phillips played great and frankly made us competitive. His arm is strong and he is not wild. With some protection from the offensive line and some experience, the guy could be huge. Actually, Eckert and Romo might just be better pure competitors than anyone we've had at qb since Flanigan, but Phillips has the makings of a special player.
Man am I glad to see someone has something good to say about this guy(Chris) I HAD A LONG DISCUSSION LAST YEAR WITH A GUY ABOUT CHRIS.Eckert and Romo will buy Chris some time to mature.Chris will be a good QB no doubt. Never won a game? Hell he played or is playing with a JV team. Chris will get his wins give him credit for taking those [deleted] whoppins for SMU everyone else quit. You guys better recognize talent when it comes to the HILLTOP. I'm a sunshiner for sure but whenever Chris hits the field again i'll cheer just as loud as I did for Eckert and Romo
![]() ![]() ![]() GO MUSTANGS FIGHT ON TO VICTORY !!!!!!
Re:I MEANT QB'S GUYS GO MUSTANGS FIGHT ON TO VICTORY !!!!!!
the comparison to a JV team is pretty true, not insulting at all. We're lucky to have Phillips, I think most people with a clue recognize that.
By the way, I think your sons are Vincent and Bobby Chase. Bobby had a strong first season here. Is Vincent more of a pass catching or blocking tight end? Phillips and Vincent could make quite a core to the offense for 3 more years, Vincent beyond that. Something tells me we will have winning season or two and a bowl game in that time. We have the young talent and we're due to put it together and get some breaks.
if phillips is the starter next season, i would be willing to bet that we will lose eckart or romo, if not both, and we will see them kicking [deleted] at another D-1 school....I still dont understand why phillips is the greatest thing on earth, but ill respect your opinions. is anyone willing to sacrifice an NFL type passer (Eckart), or a speedster like Romo if phillips ends up starting??????????
Mustangs will win in 04
I may misunderstand the situation, but when you come in as a JUCO you usually only have 2 years of eleigility remaining. If Eckert or Romo were to leave they would only be able to go to a Div 1aa school and still play. If they were to transfer to another D1a school they wouldn't be able to play because they would use their last remaining year of eligibilty sitting on the bench due to transfer rules. I'm not saying they wouldn't, but it would seem unlikely.
The donkey's name is Kiki.
On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney? Good, Bad...I'm the one with the gun.
Phillips gives us the best chance to win, period. I hope he gets to play a full game as well as season and not have to worry about Bennet pulling him.
After the Tech game last year, many raider fans kept asking me who was that qb of yalls?
Re:
Even if true, Eckert and Romo can't go to another D-1A school and play; they won't have the eligibility. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
You play who is best and let the chips fall regarding how others take it. I have my opinion, but I figure the guy who sees them in practice and has been in football their entire life might actually know more then me - I know thats a novel idea around here, but whoever the coaches pick - they want to win more then me and they know more so it is o.k. with me.
I will say it seems to me teams that find one and stick with them do better then platooning - so figure out who you are going with and stick with it.

Even if true, Eckert and Romo can't go to another D-1A school and play; they won't have the eligibility.[/quote] Incorrect. players that start at a JC have the same 5 years to play 4 rule. They spent 2 years at JC, 1 year at SMU, if they transferred before fall semester begins they could sit out a year at their new school, and play as 5th year seniors in 2006. 5 years, 4 seasons of football. Most recent example of this principle: Billy Pharis. 2 years at Westark JC, one year of riding the pine/minimal playing at SMU, transferred to Arkansas and sat out one year, became a starter for the Hogs as a 5th year senior. I have no idea if either player has any desire to leave or stay. But either could transfer if they wished. I think they would both be severaly limited in the number of D-1A schools who would want them. They would tie up a scholarship for 2 years, and only play 1 season. Very few schools would be willing to take that chance, unless they felt the player was going to make a large impact. Try not to choke on the Kool-Aid.
Re:
Good points. My comment (read above) did not dismiss Chris and/or his ability. My comments were to challenge that a losing season was inevitable if Chris is not the starter. All the QB's have a year under their belt with the Burns offense. There should be considerable improvement with a stable OL & more receivers in the passing mix. Hell, with Romo's speed, the coaches may even move him to WR. Who knows-- it might be a 2-man contest for the QB job. That's what "Spring" is all about...
