Baylor Stadium Recieves Record Gift

Post by MustangSTATS »

Baylor press release stating they have "received a leadership gift - the largest capital gift in university history - from Elizabeth and Drayton McLane Jr. for Baylor's new on-campus football stadium alongside the Brazos River. With this naming rights gift, the McLane family asked that the new football facility be named Baylor Stadium. The generous gift will lead on-going fundraising to support stadium construction." More Picture in the link.

Not word on the actual amount, but they are claiming with succesful fundraising they could have the project completed by 2014.

Recruiting and winning in Texas is only going to get harder.

The aggies like to call it the toilet seat bowl-and they kinda have a point from the air. BTW SMU is scheduled to be the opening day opponent in 2014. That ought to be fun.

Not sure what the campus alcohol policy is, but could people drink on the river in a boat?

Have to give Baylor kudos for "raising their game". Stadium, despite the Aggies trash talk, looks handsome.

You mean to tell me the largest capital gift in school history didn't go to support the Spanish department or renovate an administration building?!?! I'm shocked I tell you, shocked!

I don't think I've ever seen the Brazos River and I know I haven't been in Waco before, so is:
1. The river that wide? Is it slow or fast moving in that area?
2. Is is deep enough for boating?
3. Is it normally a shade of blue or muddy brown?

What's real and what is artistic license?

Since the point of a university is suppose to be academic, I am surprised they didn't require some money to also go to the very week endowment to improve the very weak academics of Baylor. Strange priorities.

Also - what a waste of a great site - no tailgating for the baptist?

I wonder if UT has approved this yet? When is the presentation to deloss?

1. They are also raising $100M for the endowment. I believe they are about 1/3 of the way there.
2. Baylor's endowment is not "weak." It's over a billion. It's not as strong as SMU's on a per-student basis, but it's not "weak."
3. "Very weak academics of Baylor." Seriously?

I doubt this ends up being done, but the plans I saw had boat slips in that marina area to tie up during games. Adjacent to each slip was a tailgating pavilion.

1&2. That area of the Brazos is actually a lake as there is a dam just south of this picture. So the current is minimal and it is quite deep. The river used to flood horribly in the early 1900s. Downtown Waco is just upstream from this picture and they put in the dam 50+ years ago to control flooding. The stadium is at the same elevation as downtown, so I would assume there would be no flooding issues.

3. It really depends on the weather, but it's not a clear river by any stretch. During bad rains it can get very muddy. But it's generally murky. This is probably a very fair picture:

The rumor is that the amount is around $75 Million from Drayton McLane.... only time will tell if thats a correct number.

Baylor AD says they want to break ground and get the dirt flying by this summer.

And the brazos is not that muddy... but its not pacific blue like the pic.

Also it would take a 100 year event to flood the Brazos in that area, there are several army corps of engineers dams up and down the river, it would also mean that the whole of downtown waco would flood as well. Has never happened in the 160 + year history of Waco.
