I love Buzz and he makes sense, but I don't love the next batch of guys prospected that much. Sometimes it's best to win on the court and not in a press conference,. Big splash isn't always make sense

Marquette board reaction

"Before the death penalty, SMU basketball ruled the SWC--I mean ruled! We were conference champions for well over 80% of the conference's history. Granted the southwest wasn't known for its powerhouse programs, but we were it. Dallas and Houston are now powerhouse areas for major national high school players--and that is a huge difference between the 70's and 80's and today."

I know we had some good years in the 50's................

I guess you have never been to a game and looked up.

Seriously. Marquette had a nice little run over THIRTY years ago. Who are they to sling arrows at SMU? We are such a sleeping giant it is ridiculous...

TV increase will cover the coach's salary? Isn't Steve-O lining arranging for that to be privately funded, like June Jones's salary?

Speaking of which, if the new basketball coach goes as high as $2.5 per, does Jones ask for a raise? I'm not suggesting he deserves it or doesn't deserve it ... but would the perception be that football has to make more than basketball? I say yes.

I thought the same thing. I bet the person who posted that has never set foot in Moody. As we all know, Moody is a jewel.

Considering Marquette does not even have their own basketball arena, they share an arena with the NBA Milwaukee Bucks, I don't think they have a whole lot of room to be putting down Moody Coliseum.

i like the guy who questions whether JJ was a "splash hire". At the time, he was coming off a BCS bowl.

That's like landing a Final Four coach out of nowhere and questioning whether he has any skins on the wall. It's Marquette for Christ's sake. It's not like we're going after Bill Self or Roy Williams. Who looks at Marqutte and thinks they're a perennial Final Four contender.

Other than those delusional people on the Marquette board...

Are they respectable? Hell, yeah. They're a good team, but let's not kid anyone by thinking that we're going to be top 10 (or even 25) team in a year regardless of who we get as a coach.

I think this quote might have been over the top

"Under the leadership of Al McGuire, Marquette's men's basketball team became a national powerhouse in the 1970s, capturing the NIT Championship in 1970, and the NCAA Championship in 1977. Not only was the '77 championship McGuire's last game, but Marquette remains the last independent school to win the title. It is also the last major sports championship won by a Milwaukee sports team." ---36 years is a long, long time.

Mex,

I thought you and the other SMU posters did a pretty good job of representing us other than that 'bye-bye' post which IMO was uncalled for.

For the record, while I do not think Buzz will be coming to SMU, it also would not surprise me if he did.

I would also add these comments:

In the 1930's, Milwaukee's population was around 585,000. It topped out in the early '60's at 750,000 and has been declining over the past 50 years. Today, Milwaukee's population is back around 1930's levels. During this same time, Dallas has grown by almost 1 million people to 1,200,000. So while I understand individual preferences, there is little doubt which city is more desirable.

The MU logic that Buzz turned down OU and A&M so therefore he has no interest in SMU is misguided. As a native Texan currently living in Southern California I can tell you that Dallas is one of the few cities I would move to. I would never ever consider Norman or College Station, that is laughable; same goes for Fayetteville.

They unmercifully mock us for thinking that simply throwing $$$ at Buzz will persuade him, then in other posts say that, if necessary, they will throw even more $$$ at him to keep him at Marquette. As Mex and others tried to say, this will not be primarily about $$$.

Finally, the most insightful post of all was done by a MU person, but everyone there is so blinded by arrogance that they could not see it. Poster said he spent 10 years in Texas and couldn't wait to leave because 'Texans thought the whole world revolved around Texas'. Hey Knuckleheads, what if Buzz Williams is one of those Texans!!!

You mean, when referencing Wickapedia article concerning their 1997 championship, "It is also the last major sports championship won by a Milwaukee sports team (of any type)." ---36 years is a long, long time?"

I actually thought it was pretty mild when they put down our school and Dallas. They don't seem to understand economics or business (I couldn't find a reference to a B-school). They thought Milwaukee and Wisconsin had a lower cost of living than Dallas and Texas (wrong) which offset their 6.76% state income tax; that their weather was great and their biggest asset was living 90 miles from Chicago--same could be said of Waco and Dallas!

No, I don't think it was over the top--"SMU is a Church Mouse having absolutely no athletic relevance?" and Al Maquire didn't cheat in the 70's? only SMU in the history of the NCAA? They stepped on some old wounds. If they had referrenced the multitude of infractions of our sister methodist school in LA how would you feel?

I am just pulling your leg--Actually, I thought the most insightful was the post regarding the "oil and water" relationship between Buzz and the new AD. There certainly seems to be some "smoke" up there. I think we have a chance, not a large one, but a chance.

Actually, Brats and Tex Mex have a lot in common. Tamales and frijoles are largely pork fat and masa flour or beans and brats are mostly pork fat and whatever your butcher would have tossed away.

They are not the same thing. Living in the Hartford area, I can get great Italian food, polish, seafood. Unfortunately, I cannot get decent TexMex, MexMex or any Mex in this freaking state. Since I am a Mexican American who grew up on mom's cooking and grandma's tamales.

Hey digety- I share your frustrations. I'm a gringo but used to eat tex-mex once or twice a week when I lived in Houston. Here in Peru they have no idea what it is. Buy a good cookbook and start cooking your own meals. I am actually growing jalapenos and epazote so I can cook some decent tex-mex meals.

GO PONIES!!!
