Tulane Dominates SMU in Metroplex

The Tulane Green Wave is another school which pretty much had its way with SMU in recruiting in the DFW Metroplex by taking 4 top players right from under Phil Bennett's nose. DE Sean Carney(offers from SMU, Baylor, Wyoming, Rice and La-Monroe), WR Chris Dunn(offers from SMU, New Mexico, Tulsa), DB Matthew Harding (offers from Boston College, Iowa St., North Carolina and an official visit to SMU) and TE Justin Kessler(offers from Baylor, Colorado, UH, Missouri and Utah). Tulane also added LM John Landa from Texas (offers from Northwestern, OSU, Rice and TCU). At least its good to see that there is a private school that can recruit the Metroplex.

So what good does it do to bring up the obvious...over and over again? Lousy seasons beget challenging recruiting seasons.

Maybe we should try recruiting the New Orleans area and see how many kids want to leave there for the greener (or should I say sun-bleached) pastures of Big D!

The position we are in (wins, loses) we have to grab who we can and put them on the field and work them in the weightroom and make players out of them.Just because they don't rank in the top area ,state, nat'il or whatever do not mean they aren't going to leave it all on the field for the MUSTANGS. I think the coaches will bring out the best of these kids,if they weren't what Coach needed he wouldn't have went after these kids.Bennett will work his magic.If they don't come here it was not meant to be.IT TAKES A TEAM TO PLAY THE GAME OF FOOTBALL NOT ONE INDIVIDUAL GOING TO TULANE OR WHEREVER WE SEEM TO BE LOSING RECRUITS TO Who knows the kid or kids may flunk out, quit or whatever then what do you have Be realistic we won't get them all,but YOU STILL GOTTA PLAY THE GAME

We're 3-20 in the last two years. We showed moderate improvement this year, on the field and in the standings. Should we all abandon the Ponies because we have players from Spearman (Jeff Brock), Kansas (Clayton Cox), California (Troy Therien), Arizona (Victor Makinde), Virginia (Curtiss Powell), Cuero (Ross Nigh), Bellville (Emmanuel Sanders), etc.? That's ridiculous. If these guys turn out to be good players for the Ponies, who cares where they're from? I wonder about the "local kids sell seats" idea. How packed was Moody when Sasser and Q roamed the floor? Winning sells tickets -- it's that simple. If these guys can play, I don't care if they're from Dallas or Denmark.

Stallion, Tulane does present an interesting situation. If you think some of the posters on this board (yourself included) are not happy with the status quo, read the Tulane Sports Forum on the New Orleans Times Picayune. Their fans are pissed because they're signing so many Texas players and not enough Louisiana players. They don't like their Head Coach and they think that he only got and continues to hold his job because of family influence. I grew up in New Orleans, and I can attest to the fact that what I read on that Board is classic New Orleans logic and BS.

As far as recruiting goes, Tulane has a ready-made advantage as far as enticing 17 and 18 year old kids from out of State to commit to play at Tulane. It's a beautiful campus in New Orleans' uptown District (not far from downtown and "The Quarter"). To many a 17 or 18 year old lad who'se never experienced a place like New Orleans, a weekend "official visit" to Tulane can be very influential. Plus, Tulane has excellent academics to sell also. So, it's not surprising at all to see so many out of State players on Tulane's roster. And I'm not surprised at all that the MetroJlex players you mentioned succumbed to the lure of "The Big Easy." Last year, Ryan Johnson, the big DL from Carter signed with Tulane. Now, he and four other players are transferring. And, recently, Tulane's only QB recruit - Tray Rutland - decommitted and committed to Miss. State. And, as noted above in another thread, Tulane's current list of commitments isn't as good (at least on paper) as ours. So, what does this all mean? Really nothing. As others far wiser than you or me have said, let's just wait to see how the recruits perform on the field several years from now. Let's support our school and our team. I'm not worried about Tulane. I just want to beat the SOB's on the field.

I suppose it's a pipedream to think he'd come home to SMU, right?

I don't have a clue where Ryan Johnson's going. I agree that I'd like to see him transfer to SMU. Ofa Mehetau - the great OL from Euless Trinity who signed with BYU - is also transferring. Now there's a pipedream for you.

No. He did end up at BYU. He's transferring from there. But, I don't know where.

Tulane is struggling. Apparently Johnson & the Jersey Village (Radcliffe, Tuyo, et al) want out. They are really stinking it up this year with Landa their biggest recruit. If Tulane is beating you in recruiting then you are in a world of hurt.

We apparently didn't offer Landa, but TCU did...jeez, Tulane is whipping up on TCU too. Well whoop de do. Judging from the report in this mornings DMN, a lot of kids are changing their commitments...there are always winners and losers...not everyone is going to get every kid they offer. That is life...get over it.

You know some kids actually want to leave home and GO AWAY to college where mom and dad can't just drop in on them. I picked SMU and I lived on the east coast. So New Orleans might actually appeal to a Dallas kid.
