Will the 2nd Century Campaign give us any kind of big bump? TCU is way to close for comfort, not that they know what to do with it.

He pointed out that Temple University faced that problem before they left the Big East, but he seemed confident that it would not be an issue at SMU.

"TCU has the largest expense in 2010-2011 of three at $56,245,071, according to the database. The Horned Frogs spent $22,608,182 on their highly successful football team. The largest athletic expenditure in the Big 12 was UT Austin at $125,978,117 -- which happened to be the largest of any university in the nation.Mustangs_Maroons wrote:They will invest it in football, their one true competency.MustangSTATS wrote:Will the 2nd Century Campaign give us any kind of big bump? SMU, which has gone to successive bowl games under coach June Jones, had expenses of $37,471,381, much less than the University of Louisville's $83.7 million -- tops among its new Big East foes. SMU spent $12,569,957 on football.
UNT had an athletics expense of $22,417,616, while the University of Denver had the largest expense in the Sun Belt Conference at $24,629,517. UNT spent $6,824,909 on its football program.
The University of Texas at Arlington, a member of the Southland Conference, does not compete in football but had $7,691,690 in expenses in the sports in which it does compete."

Re: University Endowment Rankings
Once we start getting BE TV and Bowl money, we can afford to spend more on athletics.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

Those numbers usually include scholarships, which inflates our numbers vs state schools. Really highlights how behind we are.

Re: University Endowment Rankings
StallionModelT - what are the facts behind your assertion - because it is incorrect. SMU is on a roll in all areas - but we do need to ramp up the endowment. that will be a part of the end of the new campaign. We go hit harder then TCU by the downstroke in the economy by some so-so investments - that is being rectified but the damage is done.
the notion that TCU is adding tons more then us to their endowment is incorrect. Their admitted students are also far under ours in quality - over 100 pts in average SAT which is huge. As long as they draw 65% or more from in state they can't get much better - UT is such a bargain they draw the best and brightest from the state due to cost - we overcome that by drawing 60-65% out of state.
We are WAAAAY ahead in national ranking, and TCU aint catching us in our lifetime.

Re: University Endowment Rankings
For a better school to compare to: Rice is about 50/50 when it comes to in state vs out of state, but they are academically established, have a much smaller class size, and a much larger endowment which gives the more freedom in enticing quality applicants to come. Interestingly they also get a much higher matriculation rate from Texas students.gostangs wrote:the notion that TCU is adding tons more then us to their endowment is incorrect. But I agree that for us, efficiently targeting a majority out of state students give us the best chance for academic growth as it gives a wider base of students with low need and high academic ability since we don't yet have an endowment to fully support as many aid-needing students as schools with much larger endowments can. Will be interesting to see how all of the improvements to the engineering school effect the peer based NRC rankings of our engineering PhD programs.
But schools like TCU and Baylor just seem to be spinning their wheels. Tulsa has made some interesting moves though when it comes to undergrad.

I think Wake Forest is an interesting school to look at.MustangSTATS wrote:For a better school to compare to: Rice is about 50/50 when it comes to in state vs out of state, but they are academically established, have a much smaller class size, and a much larger endowment which gives the more freedom in enticing quality applicants to come. 1. WF is in North Carolina so they compete with UNC (very good public school with low cost in-state tuition), Duke (top private school) and Davidson (very good liberal arts school) for instate students.
2. Their endowment is 1,058,250,000 vs. 1,196,508,000 for SMU. Wake Forest takes approximately 200 less students per year than SMU so you might argue that their endowment is a little larger on a per student basis; however, they have a medical school. I would guess that a large portion of their endowment is dedicated to the medical school.
3. WF doesn't seem to provide average SAT scores, however we can average their 25% and 75% scores for reading and math = 1315 for 2011 compared to 1275 for SMU. Two years ago this average was 1295 for Wake Forest.
4. WF takes 25% of their students from North Carolina.
5. WF is not an AAU school. In fact, it is rated as "high research activity" by the Carnegie Foundation, just like SMU. (even though WF has a medical school).
6. WF is currently ranked #25 by U.S. News tied with UVA and UCLA
Also:
Georgetown endowment = 1,160,291,000, U.S. News rank # 22
Carnegie Mellon endowment = 1,017,338,000, U.S. News rank #23
Tufts endowment = 1,403,883,000, U.S. News rank #29
University of Miami endowment = 719,852,000, U.S. News rank #38
Tulane endowment = 1,014,985,000, U.S. News rank #50
A large endowment certainly helps, but SMU's is large enough to keep us moving up.

Actually, TCU had the opportunity to pick up what is now Texas Wesleyan University Law School but chose not to. It had nothing to do with money.FroggieFever wrote:It's incredibly -- and prohibitively -- expensive.StallionsModelT wrote:Why doesn't TCU invest in creating a law school?

Are you suggesting that the only way TCU realizes the benefits of the Barnnet Shale is from direct drilling? I would think that a considerable percentage of the alumni base have realized the financial windfall of the Shale, and have donated accordingly.FroggieFever wrote:TCU has gotten a fat $0 from it so far. Haven't drilled yet, fortunately/unfortunately (depending on how you look at it).NavyCrimson wrote:Competition is good.
I'm sure being on top of a natural gas field like they are isn't too shabby either.

Thanks for the info. Great schools to compare to; an interesting mix of more traditional liberal arts and more engineering focused schools.Pony^ wrote:I think Wake Forest is an interesting school to look at...
Also unfortunately SMU doesn't have a med school, but the connection to UTSW is only going to keep growing. There will be a new joint graduate program with them starting up in a year or two. Hopefully we can continue to build strong partnerships in research and program offerings with the local medical community. It may not be the TMC, but still lots of opportunity to make meaningful and life saving research.

Hard to beat the SMU med school. Dallas >> Ft Worth. Which academic program at SMU is NOT rated higher than TCU's?
