Who do you expect to wear #23 next year now that Banjo is gone? I say Zach Line. I really hope it becomes a Senior honor each year. We'll find out at the Football Banquet I guess.

I hope he makes #48 a bigger deal than #23... Zach is well on his way... don't saddle him with "someone else's" number - that whole 23 concept is pretty lame, anyway. However, I'm sure there are some players who would like to wear it and if that is motivation for a higher level of play, carry on.

Lame to honor one of the greatest players in SMU and Southwest Conference history?

I'd be honored and humbled to wear Jerry LeVias's number, if I had any eligibility.

Or athletic talent.

However, I would expect Zach Line would get it. What he went through physically in order to play for us, fighting through injuries, blocking in pass protection, playing on special teams, etc., speaks volumes about his commitment to the team and the university. (Would love to see it go to Margus Hunt, too.)

Idle thought: what if the criteria used to determine who wears the number (performance, academics, character, etc.) point to a player who can't? What if an offensive lineman were determined to be the ideal candidate? Would SMU have to get some kind of a waiver or something? Would that even be possible?

Interesting you want to exclude certain races from an award that honors the first man to overcome being excluded based on race.

I agree with couch'em. There are many on here that in past discussions believe it should be for a black player due to the obstacles that Jerry had to overcome from a racial aspect. Some of the arguments were very persuading. But I keep coming back to what couch'em has said. On what basis do we exclude a race for an honor that celebrates in part the lowering of the wall of racism. There are other parts to the honor also that deal with character issues that I do not believe are race sensitive either. The few times I had the opportunity to speak with Jerry, he never excluded me because of my race.

ESPN.com: "SMU gives jersey honoring black pioneer to white player."

Just what we need.

What are the criteria for getting the Jersey?

I am sure many were afraid of the headline 'SMU recruits colored football player' also.

J.G. Davis and Taylor Reed would both be good candidates as well

I do not think so. Reed was suspended for not following directions, and JG has quite a bit of hotdog in him that was not Levias. They are both very good players and I love their intensity, but I just do not see them in the Levias mold. Not my decision though.

I could see DJ. He overcame classroom obstacles and now advocates a good education and hard work. His struggles were not comparable to Jerry but he did have issues to get through and he did so.

DJ would be a good one. The main thing I see in JG and Taylor is the intensity, but point taken about the negatives.

If I had to guess who JJ will give it to, I'd say Kenneth Acker. I don't know why I say that, but that was just the first name that came to mind when I thought of who JJ might award the number to
