Umm if you look at the history of the administration not competing to win for a quarter century, you'll see a strong correlation with coaches getting shi* canned. Dement should have gotten offers to coach at better places. He actually won more games than he lost with zero support from admin, no power conference to sell, terrible facilities, and darn near crippling academic restrictions.

Dement ended up coaching at UNC Greensboro after SMU. It is my understanding that he is out of coaching now. Regardless of his win/loss record at SMU, I think it is fair to say that SMU sure didn't springboard his career into something bigger and better. SMU hasn't been a "springboard" for any coach.

It is sad how far SMU Basketball has fallen. So much potential but we are real, real far from "Top 25" Orsini needs to shelf his bs talk. This program is one of the worst in the country right now and the luke warm response from other coaches despite a big pay day, new facilities, and a new conference confirms this.

Because for the overwhelming majority of our history we were a place coaches springboarded to not from.

With SMU going into the Big East, the expectations get higher and the job pressure gets worse. We will be lucky to get a second tier coach that is willing to take a gamble.

That is a reason to come, not run away; especially when $MU is stepping up in class, salary, competition and venue. The right coach, who knows what opportunity means, will take it. We are not a gamble, we are hidden jewel: a reputation builder, who will help create a great legacy for college BB, the university and, most importantly, for the coach. If a guarantee of success is needed, then Coach No Risk please do not bother to interview.

waterpony - I am with you. If someone can turn this program around (in a conference such as the Big East) it will springboard them into a bigger program at a bigger school. However, I think most coaches look at this opportunity as one with little or no upside, especially if the previous SMU coaches are any indication of the potential career path.

With the one exception of Tubbs, BB coaches at SMU have received a long time to succeed or mostly fail. If I was a coach looking to grab a challenge but with a 'long rope', SMU would look pretty good. If you see the support Coach Jones has on the football side, again SMU looks good. Finally, if you don't want the challenge of fully developing the program, SMU shouldn't want you. At this point, most of the high quality programs have hired, if someone is looking to move up, this is what is now available. There are a number of quality hires, although they may not have the 'splash' name and even then there are a few still out there that haven't publicly stated they aren't interested in the position. Speed is important, however like for Coach Jones, getting it right is most important.

BP, Good recap and conclusion. Urgency is relative to making a good hire, who will 'create' the SMU BB Brand in Dallas and the Big East. We need someone with a plan, good x's and o's and can recruit. SMU and its location is a place to create a legacy on and off the Hilltop.

If the new coach wins in the Big East I think he would stay here because he would be in the best basketball conference in the nation. However the truth is he will probably get neaten pretty badly his first 2 years in the conference. If he does not turn it around by year 4 and is still getting beaten in conference play then he will fired. The new coach is not coming into a smooth situation.

Indiana assistant Steve McClain is among the candidates who have interviewed with SMU for its men’s basketball coaching job, according to a source.
