Hey, with our record we're lucky to fill up a class, for sure. So you're right from that standpoint. I think everyone's heartache stems from the fact that what's REASONABLE for SMU is not the same as what is considered reasonable by its peers, right?

But even there, we've done well, jt. It's not like we're sitting here with a bunch of kids who can't play Division I football. We've got some JUCO help and a few nice pickups. Even a jt-certified "sunshiner" like myself expected much worse this year.

wrong jt,

especially if your peers (?) are Cartel Members and /or teams, who have enjoyed greater success recently. We are making solid progress beyond reasonable expectations

How well they can play remains to be seen, but I will acknowledge some progress if a certified sushiner's expectations were reduced. And some of the class don't look half bad on paper--I like the reliance on jucos as gap fillers, even if we're not where we need to be on transferrable hours, and the Denton QB and some others are definitely worth watching.

But it just makes me sad when I see that we can't beat out Baylor and Tulsa for some of these kids--I guess that's what I was talking about when I made the reference to what's "reasonable." Sure Baylor is a BCS school, but come on it's BAYLOR for godsake.

I'm not sure you can say Baylor is a BCS school with a straight face...but they are in a BCS conference, which is a selling point we don't have. We will beat them in the recruiting wars when we start beating them consistantly on the field.

But the money they have from the BCS allows them to field more teams in more sports. Thus, a track and/or baseball star (John Elway, Bo Jackson) who also happens to play football will slip away from us. With all due respect to Water Pony, you don't see many kids who are All Americans in swimming and football. That is what the BCS does for Baylor. It also gives them the opportunity to tell kids that they get to compete week in and week out against the "best" competition. I also think that we are more strict in interpreting Title IX than some of our compatriots. Whether that's because we are bidding for the Bush Library or for some other reason. We do seem to be much more sensitive to adding female sports.

EastStang:

You are right. You don't see many dual sport athletes doing football and swimming. The FB players couldn't handle the two a days, year round.

Bus, what about Quinton Johnson? Do we have a ship for him or is the wait on to see if one of our current recruits fails to uphold their commitment?
