Larry Brown talks serious according to KateModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Larry Brown talks serious according to KateI never thought that hiring Larry Brown was the way to go when the process started. After following the hiring process and top coaches choosing not to leave their programs for SMU, I am now of the opinion that Larry Brown is the way to go. First, he is a great coach and will generate substantial interest in the program at a national level. He brings credibility and will recruit very well if a recruit believes he will stay around long enough coach him for 4 years. That is the big "if" and the whole problem with his hire. Second, he would polish some of the tarnish of the current unsuccessful search process and quickly change the focus to the positive. Hopefully he could groom on his staff his replacement making a seamless transition in the future. If not, the program would have been sufficiently established and integrated into the Beast to facilitate the attraction of a top level coach as his successor who would by then view the job as worthy and attractive. Hiring anyone else places that coach in the position of feeling like he is a last choice and recruits might perceive him in that light unless he has very special personal skills. Yes, Larry Brown might be the perfect choice when you look at the total picture as it has evolved and all the variables involved.
Re: Larry Brown talks serious according to KateHe's like Bobby Knight. He doesn't want to recruit at his age. He just wants to coach. He has no Texas high school/AAU connections. It's to be late to get recruits for next year and it would be very hard to get the top level of next years recruits.
Stop looking at what he did 20 years ago. He's in position to be nothing more than a consultant.
Re: Re: Larry Brown talks serious according to Kate
He doesnt need to be more than a consultant if you hire the right assistants "I think Couchem is right."
-EVERYONE
Re: Larry Brown talks serious according to KateI bet he could be a pretty damn convincing closer in recruiting
"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Re: Larry Brown talks serious according to KateThis has probably already been discussed and dismissed...but have we already contacted and been turned down by Doc Sadler--former Nebraska coach? I thought Sadler would be a name that we would at least look in to....especially after this crazy debacle...maybe now we would look into hiring Doc.
Re: Re: Larry Brown talks serious according to Kate
Couch 'em is right. /No Hate. Just Facts. Occasional sarcasm.
Re: Larry Brown talks serious according to Katean interesting possibility here; put together a strong group of assistants including an heir apparent and I could really warm to this idea
Re: Larry Brown talks serious according to KateI am not a basketball guy but I cannot imagine wanting a UTA coach or some assistant over a guy that is in the Hall of Fame. I also think he puts butts in seats that none of the other ugly prom candidates can do. No Brainer!!!
Re: Larry Brown talks serious according to Kate
He doesn't have to hit the trail, hire young guns to do that.

Re: Larry Brown talks serious according to KateNow would the UTA Coach land you on the front page of ESPN??
Re: Larry Brown talks serious according to KateMy guess is it'll be Brown and Benford, with Benford the head coach in waiting for a couple of years down the road.
Re: Larry Brown talks serious according to KateReading other threads, I see I'm not the first guy to think of that, lol.
Larry Brown talks serious according to Kate
