Re: Brown or Benford? What does Brown add? Really? Most HS players have no idea who he is. SMU will need someone to get out there and get their name known , and I doubt Brown will do that.
Re: Brown or Benford?
A lot more than your post
Re: Brown or Benford?Quite the intelligent discussion of the issue.
I don't think Brown is the right choice. Go with Benford.
Re: Brown or Benford? Thanks Gostangs.....black eye? Besides the 47 people on this board and our 639 season tic holders, is it that big of a deal?
Brown or Benford?
I'd submit that any NBA coach is a reasonable addition to a mediocre college program, given the right staff around him... therefore, dumb@ss tweet.
Re: Brown or Benford? He has his reservations and you don't. He might know a little bit more about basketball than you do. Brown did say that he did not like the gameday coaching but liked to practice. Maybe that is a factor. If it does not work then you look like what you called him. But only time will tell if we hire him. I personally do like Brown but respect others viewpoints on the matter.

Re: Brown or Benford?I'd go with Brown. It certainly is a high risk/high reward situation. I assume nobody expects Brown to stay for five years, but if our 5th choice is Larry Brown with a great staff and an assistant who will take over in a few years, I'd take that over an unproven assistant or a guy like Sutton. I don't think this is an Isiah Thomas PR move situation, Larry Brown is an excellent coach.
Re: Brown or Benford?I go with Benford. I think there is a higher reward with Benford.
My view is that you get LB for 2 years, 3 years tops. He is well known for being a nomad, constantly looking for his next job and never staying in one place. His first HC job was at a college and he never coached a game, leaving before the season even started. He is well known for openly politicking for jobs in the middle of coaching a different team. Frankly, I think there are college jobs LB is suited for, but this isn't one of them. For him to be successful at a college today he needs a situation where he can walk in and coach the talent he has. This is not that situation. I don't think anyone believes there is March Madness level talent on this squad right now. If you give most basketball fans an over-under of LB staying of 3 years, any smart man takes the under. I predict he won't be here more than 2 and we won't make the NCAA's in either year. The talent isn't here for him to work with and he isn't going to bring the talent in in that short a period of time to get it done. BTW, I fully predict these assistants aren't coming here as a package deal either. Hope I am wrong. For the record, I don't have anything against LB. I used to hope and pray that one day the Mavs would bring him in as HC. Of course, that was 10-20 years ago.
Re: Brown or Benford?I just want to say....
I was wrong. This time. This one time.
Re: Brown or Benford? So was I.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Re: Brown or Benford?Ha goodman just admitted he was wrong too!
Re: Brown or Benford?I didn't post on this board back then, but I was adamant that we needed a young coach. Oops.
