Will SMU's deal with L. Brown go the way of the Lusitania?

Postby Mitch McConnell » Tue Apr 17, 2012 2:07 pm

Torpedoed? He does have a history of changing his mind and backing out of deals at the last minute. Time kills all deals. And if that's the case, they better have kept the open line of commuication going with the other candidates.

If we get LB, fine.

We could have ended this sorry excuse of a search two weeks ago and get a young, energetic and proven coach in Scott Sutton. Or we could have hired LB 3 weeks ago because when I last checked he wasn't working then either.

But no, our power brokers are more consumed by flash over substance. They'll never learn.

I think this situation is already starting to take on a lot of water. And most likely our lifeboat (Benford) has already been lowered and is headed in a different direction.

I used the hindenburg yesterday. I think the theme is really centered on historic disasters in which this search is about to become one of them.

Comparison of SMU Basketball under Doherty and the Titanic.

The Titanic was considered unsinkable. Doh's SMU were sunk more times than Ray Allen 3-point attempts.
The Titanic carried 2,223 people. That's more than the average attendance at Moody under Doh.
The Titanic was lost due to the arrogance and incompetence of it's owners. Harsh analysis of the Doh years, but not wholly without merit.
The Titanic was built in Ireland. The Doherty's came from Ireland.
The Titanic struck an iceberg. SMU struck South Carolina Upstate.
When in trouble, the Titanic attempted to save the women and children. When in trouble, SMU played like women and children.
It has been declared impossible to raise the Titanic. 7-8 coaches seem to agree.
The Titanic had a naked Kate Winslet to make it watchable. The only [deleted] at SMU games was the guy stamping his foot like a lunatic. (Sorry, but I couldn't resist).

MM/Chicken Little,

RMS Lusitania was not a natural disaster. It was sunk by a German submarine prior to the US entering the WWI.

Further, your doom and gloom gets old. We actually do not know what events have occurred. We can assume the "worst" or, possibly, consider that the events needed to occur in the sequence to-date. To suggest that SO and adminstration is delinquent or mismanaged the process is conjuncture, until we are finished and actually know something as a fact. I do not prefer a ready, fire, ........ aim approach.

I can only comment on what has been reported. And if you feel like you're unable to make any type of assessment, that's up to you.

That said, I'm very disappointed in how we've handled this search BASED ON WHAT WE KNOW TO THIS POINT. And if the powers that be feel comfortable with the way they're doing it, that's their deal.

Some in the athletic department may look at this stuff, shake their heads and say, "Well, you don't know everything.'' Ok, well then that means that they are either bluffing, really know something or deep down concerned. And they may not like what they read but they should also know I love this school and want to succeed in the worst way. But I get very frustrated in the ways we go about doing our business.

I'll still donate to this school because of what it has meant in my life.

When you're in a position of power, you're going to take some blows. The question is whether you have the stomach to withstand it. In this case, they should understand that some people aren't very happy with the way this is going.

Once we get somebody on board, we'll smile, shake hands, move on and hope the new regime works out.

Some people were born to manage and some were born to second guess those who manage. It is impossible to critique SO's handling of this search without knowing the inside information to which only a handful of people are privy. We all probably have our favorite candidates but only one will take the job. Money is no object it seems. That is 90% of the battle.
