Report: SMU hires Hall of Famer Larry Brown as coach

An announcement could come as early as Tuesday night, although SMU officials and Brown still are negotiating with possible assistant coaches. ESPN reports that Rod Strickland and former Illinois assistant Jerrance Howard are on board, in addition to Brown's offer to Illinois State coach Tim Jankovich for a coach-in-waiting position on his staff. Strickland is a former NBA point guard and assistant under John Calipari at Kentucky and Memphis.

Bold, very bold. Not sure I love Jank as the coach in waiting, but mind boggling that a guy would leave a head job for an assistant job of any kind. Also surprised we lured Howard and Strickland. Howard was so well thought of at Illinois as a recruiter that he actually had some support for the head job when Weber got canned.

at least Jankovich has experience at some of the top programs in the country. He's coached under Sutton and Self and Brown and at UT. Played for Jack Hartman. Coach at schools like UT, Baylor and OSU that recruit the area. He's knows what needs to be done. 4 out of 5 years at Illinois St were solid

I am also surprised by Howard. Everything I read he is one of the better recruiters in the country.
