Fortunately, it's sometimes hard to agree with JJT. Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
Re: Not everyone is impressedIts almost like he angrily starting writing that article-then halfway through someone told him about the other very credible two assistants so it made a lot of sense- then he added some hope because of the staff but didn't want to rewrite the entire article because he had a late date
"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Not everyone is impressedMustangs Abu!
Re: Not everyone is impressedJJT often acts like an [deleted].
Not everyone is impressedI think most people just viscerally hate that SMU can just buy success. To a large degree it's the Mark Cuban model though, the Dallas Way.
I’m coming home

Re: Not everyone is impressedDecent article. Well written and I like the positive ending.
#HammerDown
Re: Not everyone is impressedThe Media Bias in politics is no different than the local bias for TCU. If the toads had hired Brown it would have been a radical maverick move that only TCU could have pulled off. Then an article about why SMU can't compete would have followed. Next they will start using thin pictures of Gary Patterson.
Re: Not everyone is impressed
Taylor did angrily start writing that article- the second Johnny Jones took the LSU job without getting an interview here. Promise. At least half of that article is simply a rant.
Re: Not everyone is impressedI think some of you need to slow your roll. Strickland has never ever recruited a player in his life, which doesn't mean he won't be great, but no track record. Secondly, there isn't enough Texas on the staff. Its a profile crew, but based on the way Orsini treated DFW grassroots in the process, they're gonna hold a serious grudge. Asked around about Howard, and someone told me he was recently iced out of Chicago, for not delivering on promises, not sure if true, but hope not.
Either way, as profile as it is, it doesn't address Texas. Jank isnt particularly strong locally
Re: Not everyone is impressed
![]() This crap about assistant coaches are X,Y and Z is really a bunch of BS. I am so sick of this self-appointed royalty crowd. I guess relationship building is no longer an acceptable practice. BTW, I'm going to take DFW underworld approach of saying, "We want you to hire this guy and if you don't, then you'll never get a player from this area.'' Nice people. Eff it...let's just cancel the 2012-13 season since the AAU crowd threw a holy tantrum because it didn't get what it wanted and won't give the new coach (whoever that is) a chance. Whatever...
Re: Not everyone is impressedAnd we should listen to the locals because they sent us HOW MANY players during the Tubbs era??? Oh yeah, that's right, they pushed us to hire Tubbs and then did jack squat for him/us. You do NOT hire your coach based on the outside opinions of a few guys that have no vested interest in SMU's success.
Listen, some of these local are always going to think of SMU as upper crust, rich, white, elitist, etc. That's fine...Some people will never change their minds, for whatever reason. But I guarantee this - everybody loves a winner. Dallas is possibly the biggest BANDWAGON town I've ever lived in, followed by LA and Washington. SMU starts to win, and just like that, you have another Baylor. Came out of nowhere, became good all of the sudden, and then, just like that, they have thousands of fans and coaches/AAU guys beating down the doors. Unlike Baylor, however, our compliance guys are going to have to be on top of LB and staff...big time.
Re: Not everyone is impressedEverything JJT wrote is fact, like it or not. And there is not enough TX on that staff. Hoopmanx, correct me if I'm wrong but I swear Strick was one of the reasons Rose committee to Memphis.
Re: Not everyone is impressedWell, some of these guys may not have ties to Texas yet. But everyone has to develop those ties somehow. Got to start somewhere, and with Larry Brown in the helm, why can't these assistants start establishing those crucial ties now? I wish Benford was involved, but we got a good group here, we can pick them apart, or start appreciating them for what they bring in.
Re: Not everyone is impressed
I'll just say this. I don't doubt that SMU has made mistakes with the local hoops scene and fractured some relationships. But then again, the SMU administration neglected basketball as a whole for about 20 years so those relationships were a byproduct of the fracture. However, it would wrong of us to say that this is 100% percent SMU's fault. It takes two to cause a relationship to sink or swim. Now, if we are truly interested in making basketball relevant again and you get a staff like this in place -- the Texas ties notwithstanding -- don't you think it would behoove the local AAU scene to give those assistants a chance to work the room? If they've already made up their minds, then they're just looking to own the argument and do nothing on their part to resolve it. Actions will speak louder than words on both sides. If Brown and Co. is the direction we're going and if they come to the table, will the AAU side be willing to meet them halfway? The ball literally would then be in the AAU's court.
