Having HDNet may make you whiter than 311, tough call

The Mustangs are striving to hire a man roughly the age of Stonehenge, who last recruited high-schoolers in the 1980s and left the only two college programs he has headed saddled with major NCAA sanctions.

That's right. SMU, the historic leader in NCAA scandal scar tissue, is borderline desperate to hire a fossil with one vacated Final Four (UCLA) and one postseason ban (Kansas) on his collegiate coaching resume. Brown never cared about the rules then; do you really expect him to pore over the rules manual and learn them all now? Yet this is the guy they want to throw considerable money at to coach a sport nobody at the school cares about – unless I'm misinterpreting that average home attendance of 2,013 this past season.

Anybody know the number for a straitjacket dealer in Dallas? t to work.

Looks like Brown is willing to play fast and loose with the rules. Sounds good, now maybe we will get some really high caliber players in here and win big.

Let's get the deal done first. I had an expert who knew another expert tell me it's already done.

Let's get all the people who actually signed the contract(s) at the press conference and then we can debate in earnest. I'll spare the "middle aged" another blood pressure spike by commenting on the scenery and the ongoing and emabrassing saga. After all, 68 years on this earth obviously gives you the right to know everything. There's no fool like an old Fool.

Thank god you are young and still have the benefit of knowing it all. I am jealous. BTW, wisdom is greater than knowledge.

No. Knowledge (information) trumps wisdom. Wisdom is a mercurial factor. It's debatable. Facts are not. You speculate, opine and endulge in flights of fancy. When others do not indulge as you wish then you are critical. You are as predictable as the rising sun.

Nobody has all the information. And a few have a bit of it. Unfortunately, some people in life don't have the luxury of just hoping it all gets better on the wings of butterflies and rivers of chocolate. And they take that tactic with SMU's decisions. Take everything that is done at your own emotional investment, but don't criticize those who don't share your wide-eyed grin with every press conference.

Pat needs to pull his head out. " to coach a sport nobody at the school cares about" please...Doh saw to that. Give us something to care about and we will.

"unless I'm misinterpreting that average home attendance of 2,013 this past season" duh...nice research Pat.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

This staff can recruit nationally and it only takes a player or two to change a program, unlike football. Top 100 quality players want to go to the nba and i think Larry brown and this staff have an amazing sell to players who want to go to the nba. Id guess that 90 percent of the national top 100 would listen to Larry brown's pitch.

I think the article that said the upside of Larry brown outweighs the downside of Larry brown is totally correct. There is without question a downside.

as there would be with any new coach. ill take Larry brown's downside every time, thank you.

as for the impatient crowd that thinks this search was a debacle - you have been proven wrong. if you take your time and fail then you are incompetant - if you take your time and it works out for you, that means you are good at what you do.

Nobody will actually know whether this will be a good or bad hire until a year or two from now. We don't want to win the press conference but lose in the long run. That being said I do like the hire and we will have someone that is not afraid to play fast and loose with the rules. We will need that type of coach going into the BIg East. Let's get this done before Friday and let Brown do his thing.
