If we end up with Larry Brown, he's a great hire. My only negative thought is we could have probably signed him before National Signing Day. Of course, it may be that his potential staff choices weren't available by then and thus delayed the signing since I assume there is some sort of package deal coming here.

as for the impatient crowd that thinks this search was a debacle - you have been proven wrong. if you take your time and fail then you are incompetant - if you take your time and it works out for you, that means you are good at what you do.

umm, no. The entire industry disagrees w/you, and the hire is only as good as whomever the HCIW is, not Brown. Jankovich is about the 3rd guy in the MVC that should have been considered, not the definitive HCIW moving forward. Not to mention, strong rumors he's turned us down already, which could be part of the hold up.

Look, I love Larry Brown as a coach, you won't find a bigger fan of his knowledge or abilities. I saw him coaching at a terp practice this year, and he's just a treasure. That said, don't fool yourself into believing this was some victory for SMU, cause the process was a debacle, as is the close. Ultimately, it should turn out ok, but that doesn't change the fact we chased our tails the entire time, had no real game plan, and let the tail wag the dog, much of the search. Other than a few polyannas, almost everyone says this is a young/aggressive growth position, not rent a dinosaur and hope he doesn't bolt and leave us w/Jank.

@ChuckCarltonDMN @khairopoulos The more I read about Jankovich, the more I hope SMU gets him. He returns a good squad though.

I've been guessing this is the real hold up. You would assume SMU would be smart enough to have a clause that says Larry has to stay and coach X number of years before the program could be turned over to Jank. And the odds of LB, Jank, and SMU agreeing on that term would be tough for all three. And scary for Jank to take knowing how quick LB could bolt.

If Zuckerberg can buy a company for $2bln in three days of negotiation then surely we can get all three parties to agree on an arrangement.

If Jank is a no go, then who is next? Can't imagine a lot of head coaches would take that risk. Any chance Benford is the fall back? And if so, would he also solve the "Texas" issue? I was pulling for the Brown/Benford combo since all of this started, so still holding out some hope...

Nobody will actually know whether this will be a good or bad hire until a year or two from now. We don't want to win the press conference but lose in the long run. That being said I do like the hire and we will have someone that is not afraid to play fast and loose with the rules. We will need that type of coach going into the BIg East. Let's get this done before Friday and let Brown do his thing.

I'll also add that we could have had LB as our coach two weeks ago, so this "see what happens when you take your time?"-logic doesn't really work out. We were super-duper blessed to have a HoF coach, who clearly wanted to be here, that we could put on hold while we struck out left and right with everyone else. It was clearly a debacle.

look - none of you were involved in any of this. "struck out" and "turned down" is sometimes just an inquiry on our part that didn't go anywhere - sometimes due to us, and sometimes due to them - its part of how this deal works. We clearly wanted Buzz number 1 - and that didnt work - which is not that unusual. I think we had internal difference of opinion on the committee about the rockstar/HCIW vs "up and comer" which did delay the end result here. But debacle? No - that would be a drama queen term.

we took our time - we got a result that exceeds anyone but the crazy expectations. it will be very nice for SMU. Nobody thinks he is here for 5 yrs. Its a three year job for him at most - and a smooth transition to a program that will then be having some fun. Cant wait to see them all in action - and cant wait to see the recruiting gear up.

I think we were forced to take our time due to rejections offer or getting turned down to even talk. It was probably not something that we planned. We just have to see if the HCIW will be a good choice. Either way I do think it will be an exciting press conference and season tickets sales should go up. I just hope he has more that a 2 year contract so he can at least tell recruits he will be there for the 4 years they are there. Even though everyone know he will not. I also think we will see some roster adjustments rather quickly so Brown can get his players here. It will just be business nothing personal.

1. Collectively, we really do not know what actually occurred during the search process.
2. We "probably" went after Buzz Williams, Dan Munson and Rick Majerus hard
3. Larry Brown was always a good option, but seeking younger and current coach made sense
4. However, Larry Brown may be our best choice due to media attention, rebranding SMU BB and the correct assumption that hiring LB will help attract major national attention and recruits, as we enter the BE.
5. Hiring the "right" HCIW is a very challenging and difficult to execute on. Candidate has to be a proven winner, who has checked his ego a bit while working under/with LB. Can we really expected lots of current HC's who will see the value of coming and deferring their leadership role for 2-3 years? If it is Tim Jankovich, great. If not, we keep trying. The other hires look good, so far.
6. The HOF Coach, HCIW and strong, recruiting-oriented Assistants looks like a winning approach and Model, especially for SMU, which needs more than improvement, we need "transformation."

Debacle? No evidence, other than conspiracy theories and a Chicken Little attitude. Perfect? Hell no. Successful: Probably, especially with the right HCIW (see above).

I love me some Larry Brown, but the search itself was a debacle. We were turned down by 8 guys, and another 5 or 6 didn't even want offers, just to save everyone's time. I think we can all admit that Larry Brown is a hoops treasure, but lets not polyanna this up and claim the end result was part of the process, it wasnt

we were absolutely NOT turned down by 8 guys. that is just wrong. believe me - i know. Hoop - i have no doubt you know something about basketball - but you do not know about this search if you think that - and it would be better if you didn't say things that are not true.
