You'd be wrong. I know of two guys personally, who were barely publicized, that balked at feelers before Doh was even fired. That's on top of the known misses, and several others who had no interest. I'm happy w/Brown, so long as the HCIW is legit, cause that's the story, not Brown himself.

Your take on the search is polyanna nonsense. The industry knows what's up, the misses & no interest feelers are no secret. Don't try and sugarcoat what was seen & known to be a national debacle. Just be happy it's over, and that Brown may have enough sway, and SMU enough cash, to get a legit HCIW

If Jank contract doesn't work out - who else do you think would be legit that is also realistic? I would assume that LB has some other possibilities in mind?

This is a fair statement by a local well respected coach on the Brown hire.

Kate Hairopoulos ‏ @khairopoulos

Longtime Lincoln basketball coach Leonard Bishop says he's impressed with Larry Brown, but it's up to Brown 7 his staff to reach out to DISD
"We will play man to man and we will pick you up at the airport." - Larry Brown

I hope so, I think Jank has potential under Brown and didn't have the resources to succeed at UNT back then (and he was also extremely young at the time). But I wouldn't mind a Sutton, Cross, or Benford hire either. A HCIW with Texas roots I think would be the grandslam to this whole thing. Even if Brown leaves, any recruits of the HCIW wouldn't have much to worry about because their guy will now be HC.

Sorry hoop - you are either outwardly lying or just believing someone's b.s. either way - since you don't really know you should not spread garbage. i think your "industry" is playing you. You am in a position to know and ill leave it at that.

What does that mean? Do you have inside info or are you just contradicting Hoopmanx because you don't like what he is saying?

Regardless of whether we like or dislike the process and outcome, can we all agree that hoopman's references to the industry are getting really annoying?

I doubt very much we made offers to eight coaches and another dozen said "not interested in talking". If so, there are a large number of coaches out there completely lacking any self confidence that they could double their salary and succeed.

There may have been 10 or so coaches the search firm approached just to examine the market and get a feel for the size of the task ahead. But, I doubt we ever made an offer to more than two coaches. Professional search firms rarely allow their client to make an offer that will be turned without considerable discussion and mutual interest. Search firms also make blind inquiries, just to judge the individual's willingness to take another job, if just for the next assignment. Alot of coaches aren't very smart, and don't know the difference between a feeler and an offer. Some like to brag to their peers about a contact with a search firm and blow it up. But, true professionals would never let it be known they actually turned down an offer, simply not done by professionals; the world is just too small and they may see either Orsini or the search firm, or both, again.

What's the question? Two guys who said no thanks before Doh was fired, or MVC coaches I prefer to Jank?

If you were in a position to know, you would have known more this whole search. I'm not trying to be combative, but smu sources didnt work for anyone this search. The best sources always come from basketball sources, no matter what coaching search. Impartial sources don't play people, cause they are w/o agenda. They just report what they hear through the coaching & apparel grapevine, which tends to be far more comprehensive than high end booster talk, which is pointed.

So who are you saying we missed on, cause I'll add names for you..

Either way, it's all revisionist at this point, unless we hire a garbage HCIW.

I gotta say, there is no reason to throw hoopmanx under the bus here. All he is saying is that through his sources, he is hearing the number of people we put feelers out to, and then there are rumors that 8 coaches turned us down.

Obviously, we would all agree that once the information trickles through a group of people, the line between "feelers" and "offers" gets distorted. I think calling hoopmanx out and saying he is lying or something is a bit extreme. The information he got was just a bit distorted.

The point is we tried to aim high. We put feelers out to a ton of well respected, high name coaches to see who we could get. The folks putting up the money wanted that to happen instead of going through a more traditional coach search process because they needed to feel comfortable with where their money was going to be spent.

There are going to be people out there who look at that and say "What idiots". It would be like MLS trying to offer a contract to Messi - some people would look at it and say that MLS is pathetic for even trying, and others would look at it and say, okay, well, at least they are trying. MLS ended up with David Beckham and Henry, and it drove up the visibility of the league. In our case, we ended up with Larry Brown and (hopefully) some really well regarded assistants. Not bad on the whole.

In two months, everyone is going to forget about who offered who and all that stuff. The only thing that will matter is who we hired, and the state of the program. Same thing with June - everyone claimed we botched the hire when there were no bites in the first month of the search, then all of a sudden we landed a high profile coach. Nobody remembers the frustration of the search now, they just remember the end result.

There are three possible scenarios that develop from here:
1) We hire a texas recruiting stud and all is good.
2) Jancovic or whomever is responsible for texas recruiting works really really hard to build a relationship with the AAU folks in Dallas and forms a relationship.
3) The staff doesn't have anyone with ties to Dallas, gets frustrated and punts and focuses on NYC and Chicago for recruiting.

Hopefully 1 or 2 are the results, but we won't know until the full staff is announced and the end of the next recruiting period.
