NYP:Bernardi confirms commitment to SMU, former Knicks coach

Brian Bernardi got out of class one day last week and figured there might’ve been an emergency. His phone was flooded with hundreds of text messages and voicemails. It actually was good news – the best news the Xaverian star received in months.

“Everyone was telling me Larry Brown was going to be my coach,” the dead-eye shooter recalled.

He immediately got the news confirmed.

“It was crazy,” he said.

After Bernardi and his parents spoke to the Hall of Fame coach on Thursday, he made it official: He would be playing for the newly hired Brown at SMU this winter. He plans to head to Dallas at the end of July for the second summer school session.


“All the things he’s done, winning an NBA championship and NCAA championship, I’ll be able to learn a lot from him,” Bernardi said of Brown, the much-traveled coach who was last with the Charlotte Bobcats, briefly coached the Knicks, led the Pistons to the 2004 NBA championship and Kansas to the national title in 1988. “I’m definitely excited to meet him and learn all the new things I know I can learn from him. He’s going to help me in my overall game.”
