apparently there is a NCAA rule that allows a new head BB coach, where there is a coaching change, to cut existing players but allows the cut players to remain on a full non-basketball scholarship if they desire. The cut but full scholarship players do not count against the 13 ship limit. These cuts have to be done within a certain time period after the coaching change.

Didn't those players that June Jones cut several years ago that appealed and got to keep their scholarships count against the football scholarships?

It needed to be done, minus Leslee. That said, it was done w/no finesse and that's the outrage you hear. He just went apprentice on half the team, before even publically naming his own staff. Love me some Godfather, cause he gets its business, but that was cold blooded

There is no way to 'finesse' a cut off a sports team. Its always painful unfortunately and is like breaking up with your girlfriends....you are always the ogre. They just weren't his kind of players and that's his prerogative and he didn't need his new staff to tell him who to cut. He had to do it quickly and decisively. This is the last weekend of evaluation before July and LB and his guys are off to Virginia to the big AAU tourney this weekend...

My heart goes out to the kids because they have to face the reality (like all of us) that maybe their basketball dreams weren't practical as a lifelong career. But you know what---if I understand this correctly--they get to keep their scholarships. Guys, stay at SMU, get a great education, network for a career and be a lifelong Mustang! That does not sound like the kiss of death to me.
It makes sense to me.

You're going to have to go with LB on Smith. Remember, he's coming off a torn ACL and probably took a full month to get totally comfortable with moving on the floor.

I'm not sure if LB looked at the medical reports and saw the film and maybe felt like Smith couldn't be athletic enough for what he wants to accomplish with his style. Perhaps he was concerned that Smith would ever be physically where he was going to be.

Just a guess.

It's not fun, and I hope the guys move on and make the best choice possible.

At the end of the day there is no polite way to fire someone. That said, don't go out of your way to insult them.

Are you not understanding the part about the NCAA men's BB rule that applies to coaching changes?

For those thinking about using terms like tyrant and dictator is totally RECKLESS on those posters part. I know some people like to use those charge terms to cause a reaction but with that comes a little a common sense -- and you know who you are.

Keep in mind that SMU didn't hire this coach until late April, about 3 weeks after most coaches settled in and evaluated their kids and did their diligence.

How the news was delivered to the four is something we won't know. There is no easy way to do this.

The bottom line is SMU didn't have the kind of time like others did. So you have to cram everything in as quickly as possible.

Over the years, SMU has been accused of being too soft. Now, that we do something that's tough, it catches us off guard and now we're saying SMU is being heartless ba$tards.

I'm just amazed on how some of us keep moving the line.

I am sure these decisions were both easy and hard at the same time. Easy to see the kids were not big or good enough and hard to tell any very young man that his dreams and committtment to SMU is over. At the same time, it had to be done at some point and it was best to get it over and quickly move on with the new staff knowing exactly what numbers and needs they were dealing with as they recruit.

AND to allow these boys the time to make plans to discuss with other programs in time to enroll at the college they choose. the sooner the better...good luck to them and I appreciate their time here. It's tough but they will make it ok.....been there myself.
