The recruiting accusations didn't take long, did it?

Postby Mitch McConnell » Mon Apr 30, 2012 12:05 pm

Does is not seem like there is such snobbery in recruiting?

1. The traditional powers are "entitled" to get the best players.

2. The up and comers are scorned because they can compete.

3. Schools that hire big names with a great history are accused of cheating because they are immediately going after the names that should be going to the power schools?

When we're accused, just as them to produce the evidence instead of the hearsay.

I'm sure our staff will do some borderline stuff to get the kids we need, but that's what we signed up for when we brought these guys in here. That said, there's going to be a return of investment for $3 million this staff.

Bottom line: Those people are frightened by competition because their little perfect worlds have been disrupted.

I know what he's saying, the general talk about SMU right now is that we're quickly on the road to rogue. That talk is gonna happen when you change the coaching industries pay scale, hire a guy that's coached at two college locations, and left both on probation, letting 4 kids go in almost unprecedented manner, cutting the head off our comp by stealing their best recruiter, now tracking top 10 kids on the trail. Not to mention Brown & WWW etc

Hey, I'm all for it, but from an outsiders perspective, its most definitely a slippery slope for the DP school.

I don't give a rip what they think. Tired of [deleted] footing around like we have been the last 25 years. We have to play catch up and we have a long way to go.
When will I start feeling stimulated??

Look, I get what you're saying and admit I haven't had time to look for specific instances to which the OP refers, but this whole "we got the DP, so we should just sit back and pick up scraps so we don't anger the powers that be lest they descend upon us again" mentality is a huge reason why we have been so crappy and self-flaggelating for so damned long. You know what, the big powers should be scared, and they should know that we will go after their guys just as hard as they do and do it within (although likely skirting the line of) the rules. If every time we land a blue chip the power programs are going to cry foul, then they better be able to line up the proof of wrongdoing and pray to the deity of their choice that we don't bring our own laundry list to that table. This is how the less-renowned programs of the world tell the bullies in the school yard to cut the crap. If we don't have the stomach or the sac to mix it up in these fights, then shut the dang program down and save several very wealthy people a large sum of cash that they can put to more productive use.

Good post Ryan. Who the hell cares what they think? I guarantee you the new coaching staff doesn't and they shouldn't. Man up posters and support your team and their efforts. Go get em Brown and Co.

No one said we should care, and I sure don't, but it's happening, that's all.

It's happening all over the country with many programs that have changed coaches in the off season. The LB element just gives SMU enhanced visibility and probably more scrutiny from the outside. I love they are being aggressive and making moves. No where to go but UP!

Perception is irrelevant (in this case), unless it becomes reality. There will be increased scrutiny on SMU. The last time we had this bright of a light on one of our revenue programs, we did everything exactly wrong and ended up with a disaster. I'm confident we've learned from that. But our hoops team is already on probation, so we don't need trouble.

Let the big boys complain to the NCAA about us. . .as long as the investigators don't find any wrongdoing when they look into it.

I immediately thought of Scott Drew.... in fact people on this board have talked about Baylor in much the same way others are apparently talking about us.

I love that "traditional" schools don't understand how anyone could choose SMU.
1) great university - check
2) great city - check
3) good weather - check
4) good facilities -check

Compare Smu to schools in Detroit, Milwaukee, Storrs, Cinci, Manhattan - KS, or Anywhere in Arkansas. Wedo just fine.

We made the commit to be better. Time to get moving.

What did I miss, who has accused us of cheating? Link?
