What made you decide that SMU was the place to be?
-Great academics, going into a great conference

You campaigned for this job, you really pushed for this?
-Some of my guys called Orsini and said that Brown might be interested and SMU had a long process and I was way down the totem pole

Teaching is a big thing for you.
-You're right, I've been fortunate enough to play and coach with some of the greatest ever in the sport and they all stressed that teaching and coaching was the most important thing to do. And so I want to give back some of the knowledge that I have and give that to young players and coaches. And I have respect for the Mavs and I coached with Popovich so Dallas and Texas are great.

Have you compared notes with June Jones?
-I don't think I would be here if it weren't for June. He kept calling me and telling me to hang on and don't give up. It's a great place and he loves it. June called me constantly and said that we would get this done. Went to football practice the first day to try and recruit players, because June said his best five would beat my best five and that made me worried.

At what point did you realize that you would never be able to retire?
-Well, I've never really worked a day in my life. I have a lot of friends that coach college and I watched them these past few years and that got me excited to get back into coaching. And in college, you get more time to teach players in practice.

There's an asteroid heading for your house and you only have time to save one item, what do you choose?
-A picture of the UNC freshman team, the first team that I ever coached.

You've always set a sartorial standard for style on the sideline?
-I've always told them that I was coming to work

Jody Dean finishes by saying "Pony Basketball just got fun to watch"

They are still talking about him (after a few songs). Said that you have to put his name up there with Wooden, Dean Smith, and Kryzyzewski (sp?)

"I never worked a day in my life," seems to be LB's mantra. He says it in nearly every interview. Kind of like "Top 25 in everything we do," with Orsini. Maybe we should needlepoint and hang these in Moody.

Thanks for the post. He really is making the rounds. Great pub for the school.

football players that played in high school always think they are a lot better then they are. Put them in a game in a real situation and it would be beyond embarrassing. Our womens team could beat the 5 best football players.

My $ is on the men.

I remember in the early 80's when Nancy Lieberman played pick-up games at Dedman. Also recall famous Chris Evert Lloyd quote about her brother.

Not true. Actually ridiculous even to say or think it. Our guys bball team would wipe the floor with any team football could put together. I don't even know why this would be brought up.

It's like the comments we heard a few years ago that Southlake Carroll would beat our football team...

It's coach speak. If you put a BS meter on these guys, it would go off every 5-10 seconds.

Can U. Kentucky beat the Bobcats?? Maybe the coaching could actually be the difference.

Dude, don't tell me you really think the top five guys would get beaten by the girls' team. I played many a game against players from the women's team and the ONLY thing they had which could compete with an average guy's pickup team is an outside shot. Otherwise, weaker, slower, slower reactions, poorer balance...

Yes, the men's basketball team could kill the top five football players and surely JJ knows that but he lives his hyperbole so who knows.
