Steve Kerr on an NBA age limit

Postby Canadian Mustang » Tue May 08, 2012 9:16 am

This wasn't SMU relevant until about two weeks ago. He makes some great points.

It makes sense to me. Almost lost in the excitement and hoopla over the hiring of Coach Brown are this and a few very other posts about the kind of player who will be coming to SMU if the new program is successful. In particular Kerr's mention of a player who entered the NBA not knowing what "best of five" meant seems telling.

I'm glad this story was posted.

I am sure I'll read about more "W's" on the Hilltop. If I did not live 800 miles away from University Park I'd try to see some games. I've been excited also, no question. But I'll cross my fingers and hope that SMU is well represented off the court by the new players.

I'm not sure age limitations has anything to do with it. A case in point would be the Dallas Cowboys recent 1st round draft choice, Morris Claiborne. I seem to recall he scored a 4 on the wonderlic test, after 3 years of college at LSU.

What about Dez, still acts like a 13 year old off the field...

Not knowing that there is no Christmas break or what a best of five playoff series is would not be cured by attending college. College doesn't cure stupid! Those players are clearly stupid and not very big NBA fans as pretty much any NBA fan knows that Christmas day is a showcase day for NBA basketball (first day games are shown on Network television). Also any NBA fan knows or should know the playoff format. There is no college class that teaches either of those things and frankly if there is a need for it people are stupider than I realize.

Wunderlic has 50 questions if I recall correctly. Mathematical odds are that if you marked the answer to every answer on the test with the same letter you would score at least a 12. This assumes it is multiple choice and that the test designers distribute the answers evenly among the 50 questions.

50 questions that have to be answered in 12 minutes.
"Claiborne reportedly had a score of 4, the lowest reported score in a dozen years. The average score for NFL prospects is 21."

How do you guys know half this story?

"I mean, I looked on the test and wasn't nothing on the test that came with football, so I pretty much blew the test off," Claiborne said.

my employer use to required interviewees to take the wonderlic test. I recall the first question was, "what is the last month of the year"? it was multiple choice. I had a person get it wrong.
if you score a 4 you have to be pretty stupid.

He can always say that after he takes the test. There's the possibility that he really is just that dumb and needed an excuse. Regardless, it says a lot about his immaturity.

Exactly. I will say however after listening to him talk in various interviews he has given since, he seems way smarter than a 4.

The Wonderlic is idiotic. It's a almost a hundred years old, and designed so only 2% of professional people can finish it. I hope NFL trainers aren't using leeches.

King for a Day.

Kerr makes good points, but I would also have the NCAA rule that freshman are ineligible, as it was during my years. It is probably more important for FB and BB, but could apply to non-revenue sports, as well. Second, NBA rules minimum age of 20.

Why should freshmen be ineligible? For basketball, half the good players are freshmen. Not to mention that the extra year in the NCAA does no good if they aren't playing ...
