Why haven't we blamed the viral video made by the women's rowing team? Is that the type of publicity we want associated with the school? Wasn't there significant risk by not sitting in their seats and wearing seat belts?

Because that joke was beaten into the ground 500 times within 2 hours of the firing.

Great post Big Al. You're right Steve Orsini deserves better than SMU under Turner. Turner will hire a yes man that's aware that the axe comes if you stray. So Turner and his new yes-man will run Coach June Jones off. Or maybe June tires of the battle with the SMU 5th Column of Turner & Company and really does leave next time. I hear June Jones loathes Turner as much as Steve Orsini does. Arizona State was all about June's frustration with Turner being an obstacle to the program improving to the next level. These last few years have been fun, but I'm afraid until Turner is replaced we may return to the days of sub 500 seasons.

June Jones loses 10 times more recruits from hiring assistant coaches that can't recruit than he ever has from SMU admission standards. There is not a single June Jones recruit that SMU denied admission who has ever played a down of Division 1A Football. Moutain out of molehill

Some are hinting that the LB hiring was a result of Turner following June's advice instead of Orsini's and that Orsini erupted because he didn't like the meddling. Cannot substantiate this but maybe someone else has heard talk along these lines.

The only time that someone gets terminated like this is when they have done an aggregious wrong either to the university or to his boss. Anyone who would go through the shenanigans to bring in two geldings and two Oklahoma State riders over the objections to the administration is may have pulled one too many other stunts as well. Mess with Peruna, you're history!

How more inane can a post be? I heard, she said, I want to hear myself talk. Please contribute and don't pontificate. Some critical thinking would help. BTW, attempting to demonizeTurner without evidence or real insight reduces its 'value (?)'.

Peruna’s Island.

Just sit right back and you’ll here a tale,
a tale of a fateful trip.
That started from an urban park
On an SMU ship.

Coach Jones was a mighty football man,
Peruna, brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail that day,
For a three hour tour, a three hour tour.

The weather started getting rough,
The tiny ship was tossed.
If not for the courage of the fearless crew,
SMU’d be lost, SMU’d be lost.

The geldings started too get nervous,
Liberty and Justice.
Peruna questioned their manhood,
They could not whip it out; they could not whip it out.

The ship set ground on the shore of this charted urban isle,
With Orsini, June Jones, the third,
The billionaire, and his wife.
Peruna, and the geldings too,
Here on Peruna’s island.

So this is the tale of our castaways,
They’ll be here for a long, long time.
They’ll have to make the best of things,
It’s an uphill climb.

Orsini and June Jones, the third, will do their very best.
To make recruits comfortable in the SMU nest.
No phones, no cash. no motor cars, no recruiting luxury.
Just like USC now,
An admissions committee, An admissions committee.

So join us each fall my friend on Bishop Boulevard,
With the seven cast of characters,
here on Peruna’s island.

With Orsini, June Jones, the third,
The billionaire, and his wife.
Peruna, and the geldings too,
Here on Peruna’s island.

Big Al wrote:RGT did Orsini a favor by terminating him. While I don't know SO personally, I could not put up with the yes men mentality and overall mediocre leadership at SMU. SO at least was out there trying to improve the dreadful conditions in the athletic office the last twenty years. Lousy hires in the athletic office were masked by the "death penalty" crutch whereas SMU leadership picked the wrong hires at the wrong time. And couldn't own up to it. Many on this Board think that a five or six win football season is progress and accept that. Against no name schools in a sub-standard conference. I don't, i've seen and witnessed greatness at SMU and as an alum, it pains me to say but the overall culture at SMU stinks. And for those who accept those lousy records as "making progress" or "we'll be good next year", or "wow, if we can just get in the Weedeater bowl" you suck too. You have been suckered in by the con job from the Administration. SMU perceives themselves to still be the elite school of the Metroplex and the State, but TCU and Baylor have passed them by. And i hate both of them. Those schools have it going on and SMU certainly isn't worth the tuition and bang for the buck students receive. Maybe in the past, but not now. JJ was a good hire at the time, but it has run its course. And i don't buy the BS that larry Brown wanted a "challenge" as a reason to come to SMU. it was the money. Past his prime, but the real story is that SMU couldn't even come close to hiring a solid young coach with a few skins on the wall. Says a lot about the program. Instead, we had to reach back in time and offer the moon to get a guy who should be on a boat fishing, enjoying his retirement. Basketball, once a solid sport is an afterthought.

RGT should go as well, he's a BS artist pure and simple. If he put as much effort into improving the quality of the staff, as he does seeking out a camera, SMU will be in a better place.

Thanks SO for the effort, look at it as a positive. Hopefully you can leverage into a winner school with a winner mentality, something SMU desperately lacks. RGT did you a favor, pure and simple.

Orsini's lousy hires can't be blamed on the DP, and he had several.

Good on you, Prez Turner. Some good things happened under Orsini's watch (although how much credit he does or doesn't deserve is a matter of debate), but we have a chance to do better. Let's do it.

So sad......so few people care that maybe it should be more like the ivy-league schools and other schools in the same boat like Rice and Tulane. All in great cities with huge tv markets but the alumni and students for the most part don't care about sports ...maybe they just have it in perspective and the rest of us who love the big-time thrill have it wrong.
