Also, the talent has been better I think, more All-conference players, more Bowl games, more NFL draft picks though Bennet did recruit some of those graduating seniors, I believe, but June and crew coached them.
I agree the overall results are better with a better HC and DC. I just can't let it slide when people paint rusty Burns and Willis as a big failure. Our offense has not come that.far
More than likely, the attentive fan (one that has witnessed a lot of SMU football in person through many seasons) can identify that the talent level of the teams in the last couple of years is ahead of anything we have had in 2 decades.
And I am not insulting fans of SMU that don't get the opportunity to see the Ponies play very often. I just want to point out that most fans that have had the opportunity to witness the Ponies from Gregg to Jones can see the difference.
agreed...you can play with numbers all day but just make sure to include ALL the variables to really understand them...like who the opponents were and the caliber of those teams in those years.
bottom line is the past is history. Looking forward to seeing what this year's Mustangs might accomplish.
Couch'em speaking for myself, I am a huge fan of Justin Willis. I was stunned that Jones did not make any adjustments that would have given him a shot at QB. He manned up and stayed for his last year playing as a little used WR. He gave us lots to cheer about. BTW, how has his professional career gone? Haven't heard much.
Was JJ trying to make a point or a power play not using JW when he arrived as some suggest ...or did he approach year 1 as sort of a lost leader and felt putting an exp guy into a new system that was not going to be around for the long was not woth it ... so go with the new/young guy and start building for the future now ... who knows. It makes for good talking points on the board, and great analytical work by some.
I've got a good friend that lives out in Abilene. He called to tell me that JW was on the opening day roster for the Abilene Rough Riders(an indoor team that plays a 3 state area). However, he has not seen is name in the box scores or the paper ... so I don't know if he quite, was traded or moved on
