Time for him to get over that baseball sillyness and commit to football full-time. If we can't give him a scholarship, maybe we can get him a biology grant or something to cover his tuition.

Fellas,

Be patient. His head and heart are in Dallas even as he is in Sarasota. Things will play themselves out, probably to your liking. I'm not at liberty to tell anymore, but I can promise his heart is in football.

That's a great report, JAF. He has the talent to be a superior quarterback.
I liked the comment in the John Hampton story where Hamp compared Bartel, at least athletically, to Josh McCown. I hope he has a productive and fun summer with the Reds' minor league team, and then comes back and lights it up in the fall.

I recently have learned that I can tell you all that Richard has been trying to get back here all summer but the Red's won't let him. They will suspend him and not pay for his schooling if he leaves before the end of July. So he is stuck there when all he has been thinking about is being in Dallas preparing for the season. The Reds even offered a great deal for him to stay as a Red full-time and quit school but he informed them that he wishes to return to SMU and get his degree there, while playing football. His heart is here and I have no doubt that he will do what is necessary to make up for lost time. And Mickey I'm not sure where you get your reports but he has pitched considerably more than that, but they did make him a reliever after he requested his release. Anyways just dont want ya'll to worry cause he wishes he was here.

New stats:

W-0 L-1, 4.1 IP, 3H (all singles), 17 batters faced, 1-R, 0-ER, 0.00 ERA, 0-BB,
0-HB, 2K's.

They play split seasons in the GCL and these are second half stats, but I don't recall that he pitched much more than this in the first half.

These stats are accurate.

Hey JustAFriend - are you and Richard related?
Your insight is appreciated. Hope he's as enthusiastic about SMU football as you describe.

No we aren't related but he is my best friend, and yes he is as enthusiastic as I have said if not more. The whole time he's been in Florida he's wished he was here.

Updated stats:

0-W 1-L, 9.2-IP, 11-H, 5-R, 2-ER, 2-BB, 4-K's, ERA- 1.86.

Doing quite well. Maybe he should stick with baseball. Reds need to let himpitch more innings.

Stick with baseball? No way - he's going to be a great quarterback for the Ponies. His future is on the gridiron, I hope.

I want him to be a Pony as well, but he is doing very well with the Reds organization this summer. He has a decision to make. Continue to play both or concentrate on one. Next summer he will have to report earlier to the Reds.

Lets just say that matters of that nature have been developing this summer. Richard wanted to come back to Dallas and the Reds wouldn't let him. I'm not sure what he wants me to say or not say but I promise he is eating, sleeping, and breathing football. He'll be back in like 9 or 10 days and he'll be ready. And PonyTales I agree that he will be a great Quarterback for you guys.

The Gulf Coast Reds season ends 8-28. They have 26 more games to play. If he plays to the end of their season, it will take him until the end of September to be ready for football. Is he leaving the team early? The Reds are paying his school expenses. He has the lowest ERA on the team even though he has only pitched 13.2 innings.

He will be flying into Dallas on Wednesday. He'll be back in plenty of time for the season.
