From ‘32 state title to ‘36 Rose Bowl, Maco Stewart played on great teams

Corsicana - Maco Stewart’s athletic career can be summed up with a word - champion.

"He’s a legend," said Don Bowen, his long time friend and associate.

Stewart, who died Wednesday at 98, played for the 1932 state champion Tigers, who won the title on penetrations over Fort Worth Masonic Home in a legendary game played at Tiger Field.

The teams played to a 0-0 tie, but Corsicana was awarded the state championship, winning on penetrations 3-0 over Masonic Home. The game is immortalized in Jim Dent’s book the "Twelve Mighty Orphans: The Inspiring True Story of the Mighty Mites Who Ruled Texas Football"├óΓé¼╦åabout Masonic Home.

Stewart earned all-state honors and moved on as part of the "Boys from Corsicana" to play for SMU. There were five of them in all. It was a historic time on the Hilltop.

The 1935 Mustangs went 12-0 and finished the regular season as the nation’s No. 1 team, winning what was then known as the "Game of the Century" over Slingin’ Sammy Baugh and TCU, 20-14, late in the regular season. Corsicana’s Bobby Wilson caught the game-winning touchdown pass.
