I don't know where people are coming up with Hoopman's lovefest with Doh. The man absolutely killed him this season. Just sayin'

Texas is an at-will employment state meaning that absent an agreement to the contrary, the employment relationship can be terminated at any time without cause or reason. There are, however, exceptions to this rule as in the case of whistle blowing and discrimination.

As you move up within your corporation, you may find yourself employed for a term of years. In that case, if your employer terminates you without "cause," which is usually defined within the contract, you are entitled to receive compensation until the end of your contract.

There is nothing wrong here, this is just how the game is played.

I'm glad we agree on Doherty and was pleased to hear you weren't always on his bandwagon. I don't claim to be an "expert" I'm just a huge fan that hasn't missed a home b. ball game in more than seven years.

My previous point was I wish I was paid $500k to sit on the beach so to speak. I know this is one of the benefits to being in a HC. Is this also a common practice for ADs? If I remember correctly, Orsini was recently given a contract extension by RGT. I wonder if SMU had to buy him out or did he violate his contract with the talks of insubordination, etc.? I would rather have seen these $s spent elsewhere like proactively marketing the program, larger recruiting budgets, further Moody upgrades, etc.

Forget about the job, I want your schedule. Not missing one home basketball game in over seven years is truly an amazing accomplishment. That requires A LOT of open nights with no prior commitments and luck to do in one season, much less over seven. I'm very impressed.

What gets me is SO and DOH get contract extensions and soon after, get fired. No one has foresight? In DOH’s case he never produced up to expectations. What was going to change? If SO was fired for being aggressive (isn’t that what Turner said?), he must have been ‘aggressive’ all along, doesn’t just happen.
Meanwhile, they both get contract extensions so they can continue to do what they were doing? I just don’t think SMU can negotiate well. We are out millions of dollars on these two poor negotiations. Can’t you make a contact predicated on performance?

@LA- I've seen a lot of losses over those seven years, particularly under Doherty's watch. However, I still remain a rabid fan of SMU and the program. Some people hang out in clubs, I go to games. I have missed a few football games over the past 25 years of having season tickets.

@Bubba- I think Doherty's contract extension was tied to getting The Crum Center built. There were no incentives tied to Wins/Losses which is a shame. I believe my boss ties my salary and commissions to performance. What a concept!

He was extended so he could actually, you know, try and recruit players. Nobody will sign on for a guy playing his last year on a deal, and simply because a guy has X number of years left on his K doesn't mean the sky is falling.
