Eagle Stadium vs Eagle Stadium

Post by couch 'em »

I gotta say - Allen ISD's new stadium looks a lit more impressive than UNT's, at least from the outside where capacity isn't as noticeable.

Most impressive thing is that they got enough idiots in Allen ISD to agree to pay for all $60 million of it. AISD jacked up taxes 12% this year, right after getting that thing approved.

It looks nice, but it makes me a little sick every time I drive by it.

Idiocracy indeed. But, some isd will rise up and say, "we're not gonna take a back seat to anyone" and build a bigger, more expensive prep stadium. Hey, voters gave a thumbs-up to this project. Celebrate.

The worst part is that they are all ex-Californians that left because of high personal income taxes...

Were I not one of the people within Allen ISD that was stuck paying an extra chunk of change on my taxes every year now I'd probably celebrate...as it is, it just sucks. I didn't grow up in Allen and generally couldn't care less about the high school team (unless we are recruiting guys on it, which is unfortunately rare) so none of it means much to me beyond what I'm stuck paying.

The funniest thing is that it only holds 18,000, which is only a few thousand more than they had in the overcrowded stadium before....so not only are residents paying a ton for it, it's already too small.

Seems that the district planning guy may very well be a grad of NTSU, now that I think about it.

Nevermind that Texas has a few billion funding deficit for education, or that the state republicans want to eliminate critical and higher order thinking...we can build giant [deleted] football stadiums for highschoolers!!!!! And charge those same people who dont want to pay for real education! Yeah that makes sense!

Why can't they just shift a few games to a college or nfl stadium?

They expect to turn a profit long-term on maintenance vs the old facility and renting out the stadium

Eagle Stadium vs Eagle Stadium

Post by BrianTinBigD »

On behalf of someone who played in the old crappy stadium many years ago and will be enjoying my new seats, you are just jealous :-) We have been selling out the many versions of the stadium for 30 years(it originally seated 3500) and it was way beyond its useful life. If you don't like the taxes in Allen(they have always been some of the highest in the Metroplex for a long time) you are always welcome to move to Garland. As for the tax increase, that had nothing to do with the stadium. That was to pay for the funding cut by the state and to overpay for the administration and the teachers. :-)

It holds 18k... That's only 4000 more people than their old stadium... complete waste of 60 million dollars.

UNT's stadium holds 30k and they only spent 79.

Is this the stadium that has a bowling alley in the coaches offices?

You're right about the purpose of that specific increase, but it (1) looks terrible to raise taxes 12% right after a $110MM bond package, and (2) if you don't spend the funds on the stadium eventually you're paying less overall as the general costs are lower. I hope Couch'em is right (see what I did there?) about "renting out" the stadium, but it's hard to see exactly what they will use it for to actually make any money back...and that certainly won't be going back to taxpayers.

I actually went to Garland ISD growing up, where we shared 2 stadiums among 6 high schools and we all got by just fine. Allen could have teamed up with Lovejoy to build the stadium but chose not to for the same reason they chose to build only one high school...because they could pull the "town pride" card and get away with it even though it makes little sense.

Anyway, go Ponies. Love my private school alma mater that much more after this conversation.

Eagle Stadium vs Eagle Stadium

Post by BrianTinBigD »

It is what it is and was approved by 63% of voters. It includes a new weight room, wrestling facility, and indoor golf practice facility as well. The old stadium held 14000 but 7000 seats were temporary stands in the endzone. It was easily one of the worst stadiums in the metroplex. Complain all you want that it was a waste of money but it's not like bond money can pay for teachers. Its an asset for the city and the school district that will drive $'s for home games, playoff games, and other events for years to come. Pizza Hut Park cost 95 million in 2012 $'s for 20500 seats and they have to watch soccer there so cost is not out of line. Also, we have a better football team than UNT. Thanks to the lesser districts getting more of Allen's tax dollars due to the current Robin Hood plan you will see more districts do creative things to get the most money out of the local tax base within the current tax laws.

I am not passing judgment or trying to start a political debate with this comment, but it does seem odd that a community that is staunchly Republican, a party that preaches fiscal conservatism and wants to slash government spending, is willing to invest so much money in a sports program. A similar thing happened in Round Rock, Texas ISD and much, if not all, of the school board was voted out of office after the boosters convinced them to build a palatial stadium because the bond money was not specifically earmarked for a that purpose.
