Here is a great read that confirms many of the posts here. ESPN arrogance and lack of unbiased journalism. Mentions 30 - 30 series, Thad, as good programming. I'm not sure how to post a link, but this is on the ncaabbs Big East Talk board. Good riddance, espn. All football fans should read this.

SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Those of us who were around in '82 remember that ABC decided that the Sugar Bowl match up between undefeated Georgia and once beaten Penn State would determine the national championship. The only undefeated team when the dust cleared? SMU. National Champion: Penn State. And I clearly remember that scumbag Joe Paterno shamelessly proclaiming PSU national champs on television the next morning before the final polls came out. And ABC leading his parade. Nothing has changed.

Two things:

1. In that situation, it's Paterno's job to declare his team No. 1, in case some spineless voted can be swayed by hearing his claim. Every coach in the country would do the same in that scenario.

2. Don't forget that ESPN is a BUSINESS. It's job (and that of the DMN, Sports Illustrated and any other outlet that sells its information) is to do that: sell. It's the reason the DMN covers big schools more than SMU, even if those big schools aren't having good years ... because there are more paper-buying alums from those schools in Dallas. ESPN promotes everything it does so that more people will watch, because it means money. If they could make money by broadcasting a sizzling chess match, they'd promote that, too. Guys like Skip Bayless and Screamin' A. Smith are talentless hacks who haven't covered an event in years, but they're loud, controversial jerks and people watch (to see what stupid things they'll say next, I'm convinced). ESPN surely doesn't think those two morons are providing any actual information, but they do provide ratings -- money -- which is why they have jobs.

I agree that most coaches would do the same thing, but I didn't see Bobby Collins on a single national program the day after the Cotton Bowl. Everyone wanted to interview Paterno.

30 years later, it is ironic that Saint Paterno's reputation has fallen below Collins'. Nothing Collins did compares to protecting a child rapist who is using your showers as his own Como Motel.

Wasn't there a clip in the ESPN documentary of Coach Collins also claiming that SMU was the best in the country?

I understand 'business' promoting your product, but few resort to denigrating your probable rival's (NBC) product to the extent that espn does. At least the DMN doesn't do that, they just use less coverage of SMU as a method. Both SMU and the NBE can succeed by winning, however, and would say every casual football fan in America knows about Boise, a small school in a small state. We should not be apologists for our hometown paper or espn. That's BS.

They interviewed the new big east commissioner and I thought a couple of the questions were downright insulting. The host framed questions about the Power 5 conferences repeatedly (essentially putting down the big east) and, regardless of my personal opinion about the big east, I thought it was extremely unprofessional. Unfortunately, we all know tht ESpN ain't going anywhere...

I will care when I start taking ESPN seriously as a news organization, they are a glorified sports PR firm

Maybe Louisville one year was close

In case you haven't heard, TCU isn't in the BE anymore. I think I heard something about them being in the Big 12.

^Total lack of reading comprehension from the Frog...as expected.

Found this on the Big East board...ESPN Disinformation Quote of the Week:

[quote='DFW HOYA' pid='8064316' dateline='1342128267']
"If the Big East were to fold, Notre Dame would have to find a new home for its Olympic sports."

Fold? Who (other than ESPN) would make this claim?
