What Do You Think Of Randy Shannon?

Post by ThisIsOurTime »

What are your thoughts on Randy Shannon (the former Miami Head Coach)? Like him/hate him? If he were given the chance, would you like him to be a coach at SMU like not a head coach but a coordinator or position coach?

Excellent defensive mind and clearly a great recruiter, we was stuck in a terrible position iniami and I think he could do a lot here and maybe bring some south Florida talent here

I'm hearing he is likely going to be the new LB's coach at TCU.

He'd easily be our most accomplished assistant and he's only 46.

On its face, he would be considered-as he was before he became a head coach-one of the very best assistant coaches and recruiters in the NCAA. It would seem to be a home-run hire for TCU. Shannon really did take the thug out of Miami and redirected the academic performance at Miami-but new questions raised by the rouge (or not) alumni who was paying players could make him a questionmark hire. BTW I read TCU's LB Coach abruptly resigned but never heard the reason-anybody know-sounds kind of strange at this time of the year.

The official reasons was for family reasons. He is moving down to coach high school football which is certainly not as time demanding. However, he had also had a rough going for the last year where he had made a number of bad evals so that probably played a role in his decision. It may have simply been time for a change as he had been a coach at TCU for 7 years.

I don't know if he took the 'thug' out of Miami or not, but wasn't he the bagman for paying their players in the 80's?

Yes, he was. But most accounts of him as a coach seem to mark a sharp contrast to this situation as a player. In fact, that was why he was hired and promoted because of his desire to clean up the Miami program. He was able to improve the APR of Miami while there but he was ultimately fired for not winning as much as previous teams. Most people close to Miami say he did reduce the amount of incidents at Miami and was very outspoken against Shapiro warning the players to stay away from him and so on. Unfortunately, it may have been too much to ask him or anyone else to be able to clean up all the problems at Miami. The culture there obviously was not the best for following rules and so on.
