That was a good read.
In reality SMU and Penn State both got punished too harshly.

But Penn State will be able to recover much quicker (and if they recover quickly it wasn't too harsh). Good to hear from 2 SMU players who lived it tell it like it was. I guess child molesting to was not deal with by coaches and administrators should be dealt with less harshly than giving a player money.

As was mentioned in another thread, the NCAA simply backed the new president and trustees against the wall with the threat of multiple years of the DP. Watching ESPN last night and seeing this man as he said those words leads me again to believe that the NCAA is not a knight on a white charger coming to save the day (or the CHILDREN, as were so forcefully reminded Monday), but instead an organization that is well-schooled in self promotion.
Could it have been worse? No doubt. But only if you did what SMU chose to do...cover it up at every turn, deny, obfuscate, and complain about being picked on...wait, isn't that what PSU did?

One thing also...this issue is going to be in the news for years to come as civil litigation and payouts to victims happens. This isn't something that PSU will walk away from for many, many years.

SMU's homecoming game in 1988 was a soccer game. "We didn't have a band, didn't have cheerleaders and drill teams. Fans didn't get to go to games."
Um, then why was I holding and playing a musical instrument with other people dressed like me, holding instruments at that homecoming soccer game?

It was quite a year in 1988. The Gilmer Yam Festival parade was definitely the highlight. Seems like we also played a high school halftime at Highland Park, and a special concert in Vernon, TX. And no, I'm not making this up.

Did you build a float for a soccer game? I hate that.
My personal lowlights:
1) The float was depressing. I wanted to set it on fire.
2) When my sister was a freshman at ND, they won the national championship.
3) The next year, I got to watch the ND players run out of bounds b/c Holtz ordered them to stop scoring.
4) Houston's 95 point game.
Do unto others before they do unto you!!

Yes, we did play a halftime at College Station. The ags served us lunch and treated us nicely. Can't remember who they were playing.

I actually read that as 2 separate statements. First he was referring to the homecoming soccer game, and then relating to the Saturday, fall, football experience of the game, band, cheerleaders, etc. I read it that way because I do not think he meant fans could not go to the soccer games either.

I was there and can't remember either. I just remember all the Aggie big wigs sitting in the 50 yard line seats telling me that SMU will be back quickly and I already knew it was impossible under Pye for us to even be competitive.

I remember reading that the aggies filled their smu game void by bringing in Louisiana tech, and as a gesture of good sportsmanship, they invited the mustang band to play at halftime.
