TCU Oversold Their Alotment To SMU Game

If the information in this thread is correct, TCU has already had more requests for tickets than their 4,000 seat alotment to SMU. A couple of fans report buying SMU season tickets. Tickets should be snapped up pretty quick once they are open to public. Better get season tickets now to assure a seat-its the best home schedule that any non-BCS team is offering. Its a bargain-no excuse

Ticket rep today told me single game tickets for the aTm game will be $90 and tcu game $50. No reason to not buy tickets considering you can get them for as little as $98

My guess is a sad one. Probably because there is no confidence that we could sell the 30.5K if we only gave them 1.5K.

That either was due to:
1. The reduced stadium size of TCU's stadium last year with the construction. Think the total stadium attendance was only 33,000 or so OR
2. SMu was not able to sell its allotment and only wanted that many tickets.

It is unlikely TCU was/would try to squeeze SMU fans out because SMU could theoretically turn around and do the same thing. I doubt either school would do that and at least give the allotment since they play each other every year. But if this gets some SMU folks fired up to buy season tickets, then I guess that is ok.

Season ticket holders place their ticket requests and lay out the money for them. TCU then has to rerank all season ticket holders based on a priority point system which is updated annually based on donations etc. Highest priority point rankings get first dibs on tickets. If more ore-paid requests than tickets available then TCU refunds the money to those with priority point rankings at the end of the line.

I assume most programs use a similar system for bowls & away games.

Best guess, the reduced capacity at Amon G Carter Stadium. We lost ~12-15k seats last season. If there was say only 30k capacity and TCU had 20k reserved for season ticket holders, 7k for students & band, and 1.5k for recruits, parents, university/athletic department people, & the various promotions & charities then TCU would only have 1.5k available for visitors.

Ooc games usually contract out their visitor allotments, but I'd be very surprised if the two sides agreed to a 1.5 v 4 allotment imbalance.

Yes. We "oversold" our allotment last year for A&M and TCU as well.

100% sure it was due to reduced allottment as a result of ongoing construction. SMU had a lottery in place to buy tix, and I know i couldn't get them.

If I recall correctly, students had to go through a lottery for the TCU tickets last year as well. I remember my daughter being really happy that she ended up getting one of the tickets.

Still, when you are the ones causing a lower number of seats to be available, you should not be allowed to cut into the allotment of tickets for visitors. It is simply unfair and probably violates an NCAA rule. If I was running SMU's ticket department, I would get them back this year by cutting their allocation by 75%.

The funniest thing is they intentionally did construction during the season last year to try to limit the crowds for the visitors and they still lost!!!!!

That sounds kind of petty. There may have been a time in the past or could be one in the future where SMU may need some concessions in this area. I can't remember what happened back when SMU's stadium was redone. Really one game is not that big of a deal when you are playing every year. For all we know, TCU may be offering more tickets to SMU fans for the 2013 season.

Plus, as a practical matter for this year, it would be pointless to cut TCU's allotment because TCU will still buy 15,000+ tickets. It just means that 2,000 or whatever would be from other sources than the allotment. Unfortunately, SMU's fan base is not big enough right now to keep opponents at only their allotment. But with the move to the BigEast and some more success and you could see this change.

Finally, why would TCU intentionally try to limit the crowds of visitors? They were still in the MWC where opposing fan bases rarely travel more than 1,000 fans to a game. The OOC home games included ULM, SMU and Portland State. Those aren't exactly teams that travel well. If anything, they chose last year to make the changes knowing that there would not be any or many big home games on the schedule. Basically, it was a time to make changes before the move to the new conference. But as I said before, if believing otherwise helps SMU fans get fired up and buy more season tickets; then, that is ok.

IIRC construction began in December 2010 and is continuing through August 2012. The project was a complete rebuild of the stadium requiring more than 9 months to complete the west side (which has the upper deck). The east side they were able to complete between the 2011 and 2012 seasons and they were able to complete the NEZ between the 2010 and 2011 seasons.

TCU will not have any trouble providing SMU with a full 4k ticket allotment going forward. The stadium is complete & we already have to make 4k seats unavailable to season ticket holders to satisfy B12 visitor allotment rules. The visitors sections should now include the North East corner and the North West upper deck corner. Previously visitors were seated entirely on the north east side.
