my guess is they lose most, if not all the studs they had commitments from in this year's recruiting class. Not sure how many transfers they will lose. Sticky issue. Will schools be notifying returning players that their scholarships are not being renewed (to make room for a PSU transfer?). That's the culture we have created. It very well could happen and I imagine that's why the scholarship limits rules might be waived or exceptions granted.

SMU isn't going to recruit anyone from PSU unless they call SMU first, per June.

Yes June Jones confirmed all our worst fears today with regard to recruiting generally. He really does not pursue kids unless they give them some kind of indication they are interested. That argument is pretty much over. SMU does not canvass and pursue the BEST recruits in Texas like every other major program in Texas so you flush those arguments that June Jones picks the best availiable recruits to fit his system down the toilet.

Sad but true, Stallion. Jones just confirmed that he feels he can play a different game than everyone else. Hope our B and Engineering schools, etc. don't adopt the make em show us they want to be here (before we spend any time or effort on them) philosophy.

June has said before that he wants kids that want to be here (this is not a unique statement to the PSU situation). This is not the first time he has said this. He does not chase down a lot of kids. Just because some other teams may not try does not mean we should not. Why not at least try? 30 kids out of 85 kids said that they would stay at PSU so that is not the majority of the team. Why not at least try because you never know what may happen.

While it is obvious he and his staff are not aggressive recruiters and certainly almost everyone here would like them to be going after and bringing in more highly regarded kids, I never thought they literally waited for a kid to express interest before recruiting them. In fact, considering that we often hear from kids in interviews who have an SMU offer but know nothing about SMU, it is hard to see how a kid like that could have been the one to express initial interest. So I think it is safe to say that in general SMU is not waiting for kids to call them first.

However, there is no denying that he used the same "I want kids who want to be here" comment in this instance and then followed it up saying that if they called he would be receptive but he would not call them. That was pretty disheartening to hear. While the specific question was in regards to Penn State players, the way he answered/was quoted certainly could be interpreted to apply to all potential recruits.

I personally believe he was addressing the issue of Penn State players specifically, but that just means I do not think he waits for "normal" recruits to call first, it does not mean I think they recruit aggressively enough overall. At the first opportunity, probably the first Mustang Club luncheon, I will ask him to elaborate on what he means by "I want kids who want to be here" and specifically whether he really meant that he waits for kids to call before recruiting them.

I do not think he waits for "normal" recruits to call him, but if they do not show initial interest they probably move on instead of trying to aggressively recruit and sell SMU to them like other more aggressive staffs might do. I believe JJ and Larry Brown have different recruiting philosophies.

Bob Stoops also just said on ESPN that he only will recruit a Penn State player if the player reaches out to OU and expresses interest — something about wanting players who show an interest in his school. Crazy.

Just because Stoops said it (if he indeed said it) does not make that is what we should do. OU is loaded and we are not. Also OU is more of a brand than SMU so we have to reach out more than they do. Most players on OU's team are more talented than what PSU has. I am sure you can find about 10 coaches who have the opposite view for every one that has JJ view. Sadan has said different than Stoops.

The problem with the June to the death supporters is that they will find any thread of argument to defend him. They will spin it at will. If we had the aggressive recruiters on staff that Stoops has then we would be in a different position. June has shown his more laid back approach in practices (very little hitting even though he recently stated that we have good depth), his recruiting (we are now beating out UNT and UTSA recruits as opposed to lower tier BCS teams), and his staff ( a good amount of them over 60). Sometimes the best thing for the June to the death supporters to do is just keep their mouth shut. But the would be censorship. Oh wait, isn't that what they are telling everyone else to do. They are already making excuses in advance if the team is not competitive in the games against BU, ATM, and TCU. I guess I will wait for the next response from one of them.
