2012 roster news
• Wide receiver Gehrig Dieter, who sat out most of the Mustangs' spring drills because of knee surgery, said he no longer is feeling any discomfort in the knee, despite the extensive passing drills and running he has done with his teammates as the Ponies prepare for preseason workouts, which start in a little more than a week. He said he has no lingering soreness, has taken part in all summer running with his new team and expects to be ready to go when preseason workouts begin.
• Freshman Ty Law, a cornerback from Orlando, Fla., confirmed Thursday that he expects to greyshirt the 2012 season and enroll in January.

Re: 2012 roster news
Several players will have new jersey numbers in 2012, including:
• LB Stephon Sanders will wear jersey No. 23, in honor of SMU legend Jerry Levias.
• RB Rishaad Wimbley, who will be wearing his fifth number since arriving at SMU last year. As a nose tackle, he initially was issued No. 69 before switching to 90. When he moved to running back, he briefly was given jersey No. 45 before migrating to 29. This year, he will wear 33.
• S Jay Scott, who wore No. 7 since arriving at SMU in 2009, will wear No. 8 this season. It was the number he wore at Strake Jesuit in Houston, and he and his mother both have birthdays that fall on the eighth day of the month.
• WR Jeremy Johnson, who thus far has worn No. 17, will wear No. 15, the same number he wore as a star quarterback at John Tyler High School in Tyler, Texas.
• LB Randall Joyner will switch from No. 30 to No. 5 in 2012. "I wanted it last year, but Randy McKinnon had it then. Plus, there's five of us in my family, so I wanted 5 for that reason."
• LB Rob Seals will switch from No. 99 to No. 98.
• LB Jonathan Yenga will switch from No. 45 to No. 2.
• For QB Garrett Gilbert, everything is new. He's playing with a new team, at a new school, in a new offense, under a new coach, with new teammates ... and in a new number. For three years at Texas, he wore No. 7. As a Mustang, he'll wear No. 11.

Re: 2012 roster news
Finally all those #11 jerseys make sense!
Re: 2012 roster news
Clearly this was all part of the plan
Re: 2012 roster news
Seven (Be)Come Eleven makes you a winner. Good thinking.
Re: 2012 roster news
Thanks for all of your reports, PP.
Players are competitors, and surely want to play, but greyshirting is a great opportunity. If they come in and redshirt, too, a guy can walk out of SMU with an undergraduate degree and a Master's. That's more than $300,000 in tuition and fees, which most people just can't do.
Glad to hear Dieter's knee is better.

Good greyshirt. We will need him for 4 years in the Big East.

Re: 2012 roster news
PP, Did Ty Law not go to summer school and workout with the players?

Damn. I know they're young kids and all, but that should be taken down. I think my "T" levels dropped just watching that.
