Baylor offense vs. SMU defense

I don't claim to know a lot about Baylor, since I hate that place and wouldn't dream of watching them except against SMU. But I looked at their 2011 stats, and with the departures to the NFL of QB Robert Griffin, WR Kendall Wright and RB Terrance Ganaway, it looks like they lost more than I realized.

Total lost: 75.7%

Griffin, Wright, Ganaway: 4,348
Total lost: 95.6%
(Incidentally, Baylor's new QB, Nick Florence, is supposed to be really good. But as Griffin's backup, he passed for only 96 more yards -- 151 to 55 -- than WR Wright.)

Baylor's offense won't drop the cliff. They got 3 WRs (incluing a Michigan transfer) who are 50 for 800+ guys. A 4th WR is a 42 for 600 yard guy. They all averaged 14-17 ypc. Plus Lache Seastrunk should be very explosive not to mention some returning very productive RBs who combined for a 6 ypc average

Our offense is probably best compared to a blend of what UH, So Miss, Rice, and Tulsa do schematically.

We have 3 of our top 4 WRs coming back and all 3 have deep speed. We return a really good all around TE in 6'6 255 Jordan Navjar and a good backup with Jerod Monk.

OL returns 3 guys but has been reshuffled. The two tackle spots will be new guys who probably will be eventual upgrade but likely will have growing pains.

RB has 3 very capable guys coming back although Ganaway had the lions share of the carries last year. Not worried there.

#21 Jarred Salubi is a 5'9 210 guy that is really elusive and has a lot of experience.
#7 Glasco Martin is the size-speed guy that runs downhill at almost 220 with good speed.
#25 Lache Seastrunk has the highest upside but is very raw.

QB is Nick Florence who is a 6'1 200 guy with enough of a deep arm to make you respect it and enough mobility to keep the D honest on a QB read much like how Andy Dalton or Colt McCoy could running it. Not anywhere near the talent of RG3 but our scheme doesn't require him to be. Played in 2009 and had to face arguably the best defenses that UT, OU, NU, and OSU have had with their current head coaches and played with a injury depleted roster. Stats overall weren't great but showed good decisions and accuracy as a completely green qb and set a then-record for passing yards in a game at Missouri on the way to BU upsetting them in Columbia.

Came in and replaced RG3 who was out with a concussion against Tech last fall and played really well both running and throwing.

We won't be as good as the 2011 offense but should be a good unit. Defense and special teams are the big issues IMO. Both must improve.

Depends on how well your OL & QB come along. Bennett's D has a lot of returning guys and should be much better in year 2.

I understand his struggles at SMU but weren't his recruiting budgets really limited compared to what June has had on the hilltop?

IF Gilbert does incredibly well, we'll have a good offense. If he struggles, the offense will be anemic...shouldnt have high expectations of a qb in a radically new offense. With better coaching on the OL (assuming the much improved OL in the bowl game was largely due to Klemm's incompetence), I don't think we'll see much of a drop off on the OL. Offense has to be a huge unknown right now. D will be the best we've seen since 1986 but they've got a lot of depth on offense and innovative schemes that will pressure any defense. I don't want to have to rely on a shootout.

RG3 was awesome, all-world, etc, no doubt. But Baylor's team was very good. They will be very good this year. We will have our hands full defensively. If our offense can click it will get interesting

We need sacks then. I'm concerned about the other DE position. Grenier is ok, but we need a pass rushing specialist. I was really hoping Christian Holloway would step up, but I haven't heard anything about how he did in Spring which leads me to believe he is too green and is more like a year away.

Holloway sat out practice during the Spring due to some issue with a class transferring I believe. He should be ready to go now.

They're not burners and will get exposed when going up against track stars like Baylor has especially when the fatigue from a HUNO pace gets to them.
