Re: SMU in Gaines' Top 6He is a good player. SMU should make a big push for him. The only downside is that SMU's run and shoot offense isn't really geared towards TEs if memory serves? But maybe they could tweak the offense for him though?
Re: SMU in Gaines' Top 6
He'll be used like Brad Haynes (WR/TE hybrid). Says he's leaning towards staying close to home which would give us a big advantage. Need to close the deal on kids like this with multiple BCS offers, already let way too many slip through our fingers already. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: SMU in Gaines' Top 6EJ tweet: Gaines has committed to SMU. So SMU beat out TCU, Iowa, Arizona State, Tulsa, Vandy, Wake and Cal among others who offered this kid
I will not make age an issue in this campaign. I'm not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience.
Re: SMU in Gaines' Top 6Nice pickup. Here are the highlights.

Re: SMU in Gaines' Top 6
Gaines is a good player and he did have an offer early on to TCU. However, TCU made a change in May or June where they offered another TE (Bryson Burnett) and said that they were only taking 2 TEs in this class and it would be the first two to commit. Burnett and Reid committed on June 4th and June 6th. Then, on June 7th, Gaines tried to commit but was turned down because of the other two commits. He simply waited too long. Still, a solid pickup and maybe will even have a chip on his shoulder towards TCU.

Yeah right. ![]() More TCU arrogance. What will they make up next? "We will play man to man and we will pick you up at the airport." - Larry Brown

Re: SMU in Gaines' Top 6TCU has nothing to brag about regarding their current class. They dominated non BCS recruitng but they are have a middle of the road Big 12 class now. Nothing to brag about for a BCS team.

Re: SMU in Gaines' Top 6
I'm not surprised that some fans here would think that way. However, that doesn't make what I said any less true. There is a reason why TCU went from tops on his list of choices to not on it at all in June. As for Burnett, he definitely was more of an unknown but that doesn't mean he isn't talented. He should become more recognizable as he becomes the focus of his high school's offense this year. He is doing well on 7 on 7s right now. Plus, he also is a long snapper and apparently one of the best in the country which is why he was also offered. Most of you should know by now that GP doesn't really care about the stars and doesn't recruit slow players. He has often gone after players that don't get the star ratings in lieu of those who have the stars. Now, it may well turn out that Gaines ends up being the best of the bunch as who can really predict the future. It was even an open question whether TCU should have taken Gaines as there has been talk TCU wants to go to some 2 and 3 TE sets in the future. However, the coaches decided to only take 2 and Gaines waited a couple of days too long. This is also not the first time TCU has allowed players to decide who joins by a race to commit. They did the same thing in 2011 with QBs where they offered 5 QBs and took the first two to commit (Matthews, Aune).
Re: SMU in Gaines' Top 6You think so? We can certainly talk about that if you want? But may I suggest you start this post over in a new thread where it won't distract from this thread about Gaines recruiting and commitment. Not really fair to him IMO.
Re: SMU in Gaines' Top 6maybe he took TCU off the list because he visited and someone tried to pass him a doobie.
Re: SMU in Gaines' Top 6
Yeah, I knew about the name. I keep making that mistake because it is an irregular spelling and want to change it for him apparently subconsciously. That being said, if you look at the beginning of this thread, I said Gaines was a good player and that TCU offered him a long time ago. Obviously, if TCU wasn't interested, they wouldn't have offered him early on. I am sure most TCU fans would have been happy to have him. So, hey, good job in landing a guy we wanted...
Re: SMU in Gaines' Top 6I do not see anything that suggests TCU was ever high on his list.

Re: SMU in Gaines' Top 6Our WDNWHA Committe is much more highly regarded than the one at TCU.
