As a graduate of SMU and UT, I can say with complete confidence that SMU was worth the extra money.

15 Mustangs are at the 2012 London Olympics. This includes swimmers, track & field athletes, coaches and managers. We have enjoyed having scores of SMU athletes over the years. Here is a list:

Water Pony, I spaced on Richie snd Amy at those '84 games. I was a security guard at the swim stadium. Got to see them win their medals. Awesome times for SMU athletes.

Go Ponies!!

I would be curious to know how many of those athletes that one the medals were actual from the State of Texas? In addition, how well do you think UT would do without the state and federal tax dollars?

That's a question for an alternate universe as any state school would be dramatically different if it were private instead of public. A few would be just as big, most would be a lot smaller and many wouldn't exist.

Private universities also receive federal (loans, research grants, etc.) and state (grants, tax abatements, etc.) funding.

This thread began by showing a picture comparing UT to other countries. It was already ludicrous to begin with. I just pointed out some examples of why it was exactly that. My point was the university did not do it on its own. It did it in large part thanks to the help of the State and federal taxes. They also recruited players with this money in the form of scholarships that are not even in the State and even in the US in a number of cases. in contrast, countries don't normally recruit other players outside of their own country. So that alone shows the absurdity. Also, it is true that private institutions take some federal funding but the vast majority of the money is not from public sources. In addition, the private school distinction is irrelevant here because no private school is bragging it is better than other countries in getting olympic medals. if it were, then, you might have a point.

Agreed, it was stupid for UT to show that stat when they aren't even the most accomplished school in Olympic history in THIS COUNTRY. But, they are desperate to fill time on a channel no one watches so they'll throw up anything they can create.

A few countries are recruiting athletes from other countries, but the numbers aren't big enough yet to make a significant difference in the medal count. http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/20 ... e-olympics

I read that the SEC has the most Olympians at London. My sister is in London for the Olympics and she said that she saw an SMU logo one time. She has seen the Texas logo several times. And saw Oklahoma State, Oregon, Florida State, Texas Tech and more.
A Kenyan and Texas Tech grad won a silver medal in the women's 10,000 meters Friday night.
