Isn't it kind of normal for some freshmen to show up every year thinking they're in shape? Maybe this is just the guys learning the difference between high school shape and college shape.

Exactly. There were actually only a couple of guys off to the side, and as coach Jones said, a couple of them were Lowe and Williams, who had injuries coming in.
There didn't look to be a lot of guys dragging. The people I saw who struggled at the end were younger players who had tried to show off at the beginning and out sprint each other on the first runs and then just were spent. Going all out on the first set of 220's doesn't make a lot of sense when you are going to be running them for an hour. Rookies

Spike Davis was a freaking beast in the conditioning runs. He lead the linemen runs every single time, and on the last one beat everyone by about 20 yards. That guys is nuts. Great person to have on the team and inspire others. Great warpaint on the first day, too.

Thanks, JasonB!
Love me some Spike Davis.
Wish we had 2-3 more just like him. We need guys like that in the trenches to hang with the likes of aTm ...
Love me some Spike Davis.

He may not start, but we haven't had depth like Davis in many years on the DL. Hope he gets to play a lot this year. Didn't he squat over 800 lbs. this summer ?

Yup. It was a so-called "safety squat," in which the risk of injury is reduced because the weight slides up and down a large metal frame, but yes, he still lifted 815 pounds.
